Quick Notes

This is an opinion based review, I am not a professional critic.

I played through this game on the PS3, but did rent it for the 360 to see the differences. So most things I touch on, will be through my expierence with the playstation.

A few facts

Title: Red Dead Redemption
Developers: Rockstar
Platforms: Xbox 360, Playstation 3
Genre: Sandbox-Action
Modes: Single player and Multiplayer
Release date: May 18th 2010.

Story

The story is a big part of this game. I feel it intrigues you, and never lets you go. The story is set in 1911, in a western setting.I didn't think I'd like the western setting, but they do a great job of setting the atmosphere. Everything from outlaws going crazy, horse riding, herding cattle, saloons, it's all here. It revolves around a man named John Marston who is a former gang member. He is taken away from his family by the government and is told he will be returned if he kills his former gang members. He enters a country called New Austin and sets out to kill one of his old friends. Bill Williamson. Aside from the actually plot I want to mention that the voice acting is superb, and the characters progress at a steady rate making you actually care about them.

Gameplay

It plays a lot like Rockstars Grand Theft Auto series. There are usually multiple missions available at one time that will progress the story and you can take them in any order you choose. The missions are usually fun and unrepetitive, but there are some stupid missions in there that I found tedious like having to herd cattle. I just didn't find it fun and it took quite a while to do. There are also side missions such as something like hunting. They will give you a task like killing 5 coyotes which will raise your hunting skill, but has absolutely nothing to do with the main storyline. Keep in mind that this is a sandbox game so you can do whatever you want whenever.

Graphics

The game looks great. It may not be on par with some titles that have recently been released, but on general gaming standards this game looks great. Some textures are a little clunky, but that can be forgiven with the beautiful open world the game provides for you. I did expierence a little bit of slowdown however, particularly on the Playstation. Out of the 2 consoles the 360 looks a little bit sharper, but if you weren't trying to notice it, you probably wouldn't. I also feel I should mention the physics system because it's something I really appreciated with this game. It's a nice touch when you fall down a hill and you don't just ragdoll, the animations of him actually rolling down and picking himself off the ground are a nice touch.

Enjoyment

My expectations coming into this game weren't too high. I didn't like the concept of a wild west theme, but this game does it right. The atomsphere will pull you into the west and the great characters and voice acting only help. If I had to describe this game in one word it would be fun. Which is everything a game should be. Even if you're not a fan of sandbox games or Rockstar I still think you should definitely give this game a try. I think you'll be pleasantly suprised.

Verdict

The main story will take you about 20-30 hours to complete. However, with hours upon hours of side quests, upgrades, areas to explore and some decent online play, there is a lot of replay value. There is no question about it being worth the $60. If you're a sandbox fan then it is a no brainer you should buy this game. If you're someone who is looking for a game with a strong story and wants something new, I also think you should buy this game. If you strongly dislike sandbox games, I still think you should rent this game.

Final Score - 9.5/10 (.5 taken off for certain clunky graphical related issues, and repetetive quests)
