This time, I'm going to focus on an underappreciated platformer which, again, many of you may not be familiar with. Let us begin.![]() _____________ Gameplay: _____________ The game is easy enough to control, as all platformers typically are, and, during the early parts, feels kinda like a Sonic game minus the speed and special stages. In reality, though, you possess four capabilities that the blue hedgehog lacks, which are the ability to lift objects, the ability to push/pull objects, an additional type of jump (a tail jump) that also acts as an attack and adds additional height to your jump, and a penguin sidekick that hardly looks like penguin who acts as both a primary form of attack and an additional hit point. Early parts of the game feel as any Nintendo platformer would at the time: simple enough, but progressively challenging the further you get in the game. Unfortunately, the game can quickly become difficult, with some areas requiring great skill and/or near pixel perfection in order to avoid being hit. I sometimes pray I have enough lives to be able to survive through some areas without my penguin companion, who, despite being an abomination of a penguin, does make himself useful. Lives, while I'm at it, come in the shape of Ardy's head, and could also be increased by collecting 100 stars, which are scattered throughout the levels. There are some puzzle elements to this game which make use of your ability to move objects, and failing to successfully go through one of these puzzle-like areas doesn't often result in negative consequences, unless you happen to have killed yourself by mistake. Despite the issues with difficulty, the gameplay is still fun and entertaining, if unforgiving at times, and the bosses provide a good challenge (if you don't exploit their programming). ![]() _____________ Graphics: _____________ The graphical style of the game is pleasant, with any form of brown apparently being the developer's favorite color, as many stages make near-excessive use of the color, though this is reasonable, as many environments in game take place within a forest-y or earthy area. The characters are drawn and represented in somewhat of a cartoony stylle, similar to Sonic in that way, except more anatomically correct (sometimes, just look at Puck the Penguin), and there are even humans in the game, though the animal creatures play the primary role in the story. The levels themselves look as one would expect them to in any given region, with a few exceptions, and overall, I don't see many problems with the game's graphical representation, especially given its time. ![]() _____________ Music: _____________ The music in the game is good, but probably not comparable to other games with great soundtracks like ones in the Sonic or Donkey Kong franchise, but some of the game's level themes have lingered in my mind, with the first forest level in particular being my favorite, although it is unfortunately too short, in my opinion, and the overworld theme that reminds me of the Final Fantasy series (mostly IX). The soundtrack of the game seems to do a good job of fitting the stages and cutscenes (if you can call them that), with underground levels sounding like underground levels, forest areas sounding like forest areas, and so on and so forth. Overall, I don't have many qualms with the music of the game. _____________ Plot: _____________ Considering that this game is an early platformer, not much plot is to be expected, but it does have one, though you may have to guess at what is occurring during certain cutscenes. Essentially, the plot boils down to, a rainbow has been shattered (or something like that, though the game itself doesn't say that), and Ardy (Sonic) must collect the seven magic crystals (Chaos Emeralds) before the evil emperor (Dr. Robotnik) can get his hands on them and rule the world. Also, the seven crystals grant a wish when all are collected. Along the way, Ardy is assisted and delayed by friends and foes alike, with some foes being foes simply because they had a crystal, and not because they were working for the emperor. Also, in the Japanese version of the game, one could argue that Ardy is really just some heroic sociopath, though that is mostly inferred due to the backgrounds of certain stages and due to his reaction immediately after a certain character is discovered to be dead. ![]() _____________ Lifetime/Overall: _____________ While the game is fun, and I happen to play it whenever I'm bored and don't feel like playing Sonic or Donkey Kong country, there isn't too much one can really do with this game. The game itself isn't very long, possibly about the length of a Sonic game, perhaps slightly less/more, though dying multiple times may make it somewhat longer. You're really better off just using an emulator to play it, as the game can be really difficult to find in retro game stores. Really, the game is better than I originally expected it to be, given my experience with a previous Sonic knockoff (Bubsy), and it actually manages to differentiate itself from being simply a knockoff by adding new elements to the gameplay and providing an excellent challenge to the field. I would recommend this game for those who enjoy platformers. Gameplay: 4/5 Music: 4/5 Graphics: 4/5 Plot: 3/5 Overall: 4/5 Edited by Mr. Fievel, Dec 5 2010, 12:44 PM.

Photobucket is garbage and wants me to pay money to use my own images here all of the sudden (even though it was never an issue for years).
See if I ever use Photobucket for anything ever again.
