Today's review is for none other than Claymates. A game I have played since I was a very young lad.![]() ____________________________ Gameplay: ____________________________ Claymates is, basically, a platformer. You've likely played platformers before, and as such, this game shouldn't be too much of a surprise in terms of what you can expect. The game isn't too difficult, though it can get mildly frustrating at later parts of the game. For a good portion of the game, you will be playing as a ball of clay that's blue. It can punch as an attack for self-defense, and it can roll, and that's pretty much it. If you are the ball, you can only take on hit before you die. Extra hit points are earned in a similar manner to the Mario series, in that you must collect power-ups if you wish to survive an attack. These power-ups come in the shape of little balls of colored clay that can transform you into one of five animal creatures. There's the mouse (Gray) that barks as an attack and can reach speeds that easily rival (and even surpass, in my opinion) Sonic's speed. Then there's the cat (Red) who can climb walls and scratches as its attack. A gopher (Brown) who can dig through certain areas and throws acorns as its offensive ability. A duck (Green) who can fly and peck. Lastly, there's the fish (Purple) who is good for underwater terrain, but can last long outside of the water, and it's attack comes in the form of a bubble. Also, if you find an additional ball of clay while powered-up, you will obtain a third hit point in the form of a floating ball of clay that can attack enemies for you. Power-ups aren't really required to progress through the levels, but utilizing them efficiently and effectively can earn you extra points and lives. Sadly, you can only keep power-ups until the stage ends, at which point, your hit points are converted into regular points that can take you to a bonus stage if you earned enough. There's also a secondary bonus stage that becomes accessible when you spell the word CLAY with letters you obtain at the end of every level, which also allows you to earn multiple lives if you can get to them. ![]() The game is typically easier if you use the animal creatures' abilities to progress through the levels, as certain animals can bypass some of the hazards of certain levels, but sometimes it is actually easier to play as the ball (though not typically). The overworld basically consists of one region of the actual world (our world), with most regions having four stages, with the last level in each region containing a boss that basically requires you to make use of one of the animal power-ups in order to defeat it. After a level is completed, there are typically mini-puzzles that you need to solve using some robots who basically go in a straight line until they hit an obstacle, and some random objects in the overworld. You will usually have to push objects in a certain way to get the robots to reach their destination and unlock the next level. I feel it's somewhat of a nice touch for a simple platformer game. ____________________________ Story/Plot: ____________________________ The game doesn't really have much of a plot, but it does have one so... Basically, your father just invented a serum that can transform people into animals using clay, but before he could utilize it, a man with a mask enters the room and kidnaps your father, cursing you and transforming you into a ball of clay before he leaves with your father and the serum. Determined to rescue his father and the serum despite being nothing more than a ball of clay, Clayton (ha), resolves to go defeat the man with the mask to save the day. ![]() ____________________________ Music/Sound: ____________________________ Considering that the game itself is very lighthearted and non-serious, it only makes sense that the music reflects that. The music isn't particularly great, but it is decent enough, and very catchy (at least, to me it is), and if you've ever played another game by the company (Interplay, the company that also made Lost Vikings, if you've ever played that), you should know what kind of music to expect. It has a quirky feel to it, for the most part, but it isn't unwelcome. Considering what the game is, it actually fits very well, and even the sound effects do a great job of enhancing the overall silly atmosphere. ____________________________ Graphics/Art: ____________________________ Look at the name of the game. What do you expect? Everything in the game is designed to look as if it were made of clay, from the lava, to the protagonist, to the enemies, even the scenery and the overworld appear as if they were made of clay, and for the time period in which it was realized, I believe they made good use of the graphics engine of the Super Nintendo. They may not be as good as Donkey Kong Country graphics, but hell, they were never aiming for that. Besides, it only works to enhance the atmosphere, which is always a positive. ![]() ____________________________ Overall/Lifetime: ____________________________ I have personally played this game numerous times, and find it to be of acceptable difficulty and it generally gives me a good experience. It may not be the best platformer, but it certainly is a fun one. As for lifetime, the game is relatively short, though not necessarily Sonic 1 short, so you can beat the game fairly quickly, provided you don't die excessively, which is entirely possible for newcomers to the game. Overall, I'd say the game is pretty good, and would recommend the game to anyone who wants to play a platformer that doesn't really get the love it deserves. ![]() Gameplay: 3/5 Story: N/A Music/Sound: 3/5 Graphics/Art: 4/5 Overall: 3/5 |

Photobucket is garbage and wants me to pay money to use my own images here all of the sudden (even though it was never an issue for years).
See if I ever use Photobucket for anything ever again.
