It's been a while since I last did a review, but after beating this game again twice recently, I decided to do another review. This time for Iji.![]() ____________________________ Gameplay: ____________________________ Iji is, as described by the creator, an action-packed, strategic platform shooter. This should give you a basic idea of what gameplay is like, but I'm going to go more in depth. Basically, you control Iji as she travels from point A to point B. You are armed with a nanogun, a weapon which has multiple forms of attack (such as Shotgun, Machine Gun, Rockets, etc) and you must progress through each level. You have the option to kill if you so choose, but the game is entirely possible, if more difficult, to complete without killing any enemies. Iji's nanogun receives power from her nanofield, a device which enables her to make use of alien technology by absorbing bits of nano that can be found lying around. Her nanofield also acts as a form of defense, protecting her from enemy attacks. Her health meters come in the form of a green (armor) and a red (health) one. Armor Points are lowered when you take damage from weak enemy attacks, such as shotgun blasts or being assaulted by a machine gun. When her armor bar reaches zero, she loses one Health Point, and her armor recovers completely. Powerful enemy attacks, however, bypass her Armor and only deal Health damage (typically two unless you upgrade a certain thing). Armor and Health can be restored by finding the various bits of nano lying around. Nano comes in three forms: Blue (which gives you experience and recovers a bit of armor), Green (which only recovers armor), and Red (which recovers health and armor). Experience is used to upgrade various stats. The Health stat determines the amount of Health Points you have. Attack determines the amount of damage your weapons do. Assimilate determines how much ammunition you can carry and how much armor is recovered by nano. Strength determines how powerful your kicks are. Crack determines how many things you can hack into. Lastly, Komato and Tasen enable you to use enemy weapons. Upgrading your stats enables you to take alternate routes through levels, and also enables you to acquire secret items located throughout every level. You are only allowed to gain five levels per sector, though, forcing you to decide what stats you wish to focus to progress through the game. An additional level can be gained by finding what is called a Supercharge, but these often require you to understand the game mechanics, know how your weapons work, know your surroundings, and be inventive. ![]() In the game, you will face hordes of extraterrestrial foes whose primary objective is to eliminate all humans on the planet. They use the same weapons as you, and many have more health than you do, so eliminating or passing some foes requires you employ various strategies to deal with them. Upgrading your Strength will allow you to simply kick some enemies and/or doors out of the way, increasing Attack will make foes fall faster, and heightening Crack will allow you to open alternate routes and weaken or kill some enemies. By upgrading your stats intelligently, you will be able to deal with various threats you otherwise would not have been able to. ____________________________ Story/Plot: ____________________________ The main character is Iji, a woman who was touring a facility her father and brother, Dan, work at with her little sister, Mia. Iji stops by a window during the tour and notices a strange light coming from several clouds outside, which is soon followed by powerful beams of light raining down upon the surface of the planet. Iji wakes up weeks/months later to find that everyone around her is dead, and her only assistance comes from her brother, Dan, who managed to survive the alien onslaught by hiding in a control room. He tells Iji that several scientists reverse engineered the alien technology and used Iji as a test subject for the nanofield and proceeds to tell her that she is the only one capable of attempting to convince the alien leaders to halt their invasion and leave. This game is quite unique for a game of its type. How you play the game actually will affect the storyline somewhat depending on how many people you kill. If you kill too many enemies, your foes will begin to grow fearful (which can be discovered by reading alien log books) and they will be more aggressive in their attempt to annihilate you. If you kill no enemies, some aliens will begin to trust and befriend you, and even provide some assistance in taking down the alien threat. A certain weapon can only be obtained by being Pacifistic, whereas you will have an easier time if you play Aggressively. Dialogue between main characters also changes to reflect your play style, and some characters may not even appear depending on what you decide to do, though in the harder difficulties (Ultimortal and possibly Reallyjoel's Dad mode) you are required to play aggressively. Nonetheless, this game provides an excellent take on the whole "Alien Invasion" theme. ![]() ____________________________ Music/Sound: ____________________________ The music for the game is absolutely superb, despite there being relatively few themes, but the theme that stands out the most is without a doubt the final boss' theme, which is easily one of my favorite boss themes ever made. Since the environment always has the sane theme, the level themes are made to suit the mood rather than the area, and they always manage to fit well, whether it's meant to sound urgent, peaceful, sinister, and any other feel the game wishes you to have. As for the sound effects, I personally believe that they were done rather well. Shotgun blasts really do sound like shotgun blasts, and alien weapons sound pretty much what you would expect them to sound like based on how they work. The voice acting is also done fairly well. Iji's vocal tone changes to match you Pacifism/Aggression, and other voices match the character they're attempting to portray rather well. Remar himself stated that when he chose voice actors, he did so based on how cool/awesome/good they sounded. ____________________________ Graphics/Art: ____________________________ Probably the only thing that could bring the game down somewhat. The art leaves much to be desired, but considering the fact that the game was made by a single person (excluding music and voice acting), I believe it is entirely forgivable, as it never manages to detract from my enjoyment of the game. As for level design, I feel the facility is designed rather well, and looks and feels like a somewhat abandoned scientific facility. The backgrounds have tables, chairs, computers, and vents placed reasonably well, and gives the game a slightly more 3-dimensional feel to it. ____________________________ Overall/Lifetime: ____________________________ This game has great replay value due to there being multiple paths and difficulty levels and play styles, and without a doubt, this game certainly has lifetime. As a whole, I feel this game rivals many mainstream games, and while the simple look of the game belies the true, profoundly insightful nature of the game. It is definitely one of the greatest games I have ever played, and due to it being free, I would completely recommend giving it a try. ![]() Gameplay: 5/5 Story/Plot: 5/5 Music/Sound: 5/5 Graphics/Art: 3/5 Overall: 5/5 A link for any interested. http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php |

Dude, I love this game. I've been watching BrightRoar's LP of it and I've considered LP'ing it myself. |

Photobucket is garbage and wants me to pay money to use my own images here all of the sudden (even though it was never an issue for years).
See if I ever use Photobucket for anything ever again.
