![]() This is an opinion based review. I am not a professional critic. Title: Chrono Cross Release Date: Japan - November 18, 1999 North America - August 15, 2000 Developers: Sqaure Genre: Role-Playing Game Platform: Playstation Overview The somewhat obscure sequel to Sqaure's hit Chrono Trigger Story The game has you take control of Serge, a young adult living in El Nido, a tropical area inhabited by Ancient-Natives, and beings called Demi-Humans. While collecting dragon scales for a friend, Serge slips into an alternate dimension where he drowned ten years ago. He meets Kid, a young Australian lady. Not long into their journey Serge learns that ten years ago the universe split into two dimensions, one where Serge lived, and another where he died. Using Kid's astral amulet Serge travels between the dimensions in an effort to save the world. This may sound a little vague, but that's because I can't say much without spoiling the whole story. What I've said is already a little too much. The story paces very well. It gives characters enough time to develop without being too lengthy. The story is also incredibly deep and easy to get caught up in. By the end, Serge, Kid and the others seem like old friends. Gameplay The game plays as a standard RPG, something you'd expect from Sqaure. The effort put into this game is of that which you will only see from Sqaure. Hours upon hours of sidequests, over 40 unlockable party members, and there are also 3 endings. An interesting thing about this game, is its battle system, it was widely criticized by Trigger fans, for no reason other than "It's not the same" The battle system is turned base, each unlockable character has an innate color (Red, Blue, White, etc.) This adds a rock paper scissors aspect to the game. Red innate characters have same type bonuses with red elements (attacks), and red elements are most effective against blue innate characters. The battle system can be compared to pokemon. As for progressing the story, the game will lightly push you along, giving you hints of what to do next, similar to Navi from Ocarina of Time. You are however able to progress through the story when you wish, a large number of sidequests and characters are open from the get go. The game also leaves a lot of room for exploration. The world of El Nido isn't small, and there are two dimensions for you to explore. Beware, actions in one dimension, may affect the other. Graphics The graphics are definitely dated, but you'd expect that from a game that is nearly 11 years old. For it's time, the game looks good. It doesn't look absolutley stellar, but it has its charms. The enviroments definitely look good, they're colourful, and the texture work is some of the best on the Playstation. The element effects also look great for their time, but there are some lackluster ones. Throw in some pretty ugly character design and you have a sub par looking game. However, the CGI scenes in this game, are simply the best of the fifth generation. I am not joking when I say some of them can pass as cut scenes from this generation. All in all, the graphics aren't a very strong point of this title, but they're nothing to complain about. ![]() This is a screen of Termina, one of the first towns you will see in the game. The resolution on this screen is rather low, it does look better in game. Music The soundtrack of Chrono Cross is legendary, unfortunatley it is only legendary amongst a small number of fans. The soundtrack is full of peaceful arrangements that fit the mood of the tropical atmosphere. It also has it's fair share of fast paced battle music that will get you ready for that upcoming boss fight. I'm going to leave a few links to music from the soundtrack and let it speak for itself. Kid's Theme Scars Of Time [Theme] Magical Dreamers Unstolen Jewel Final Score They just don't make games like this anymore. Chrono Cross is up there with some of the best in the fifth generation, a big feat considering how many people consider the fifth to be the best. I can't reccomend this game enough, it will last you a good 20 hours, more if you want 100%. You owe it to yourself to at least try this game, use an emulator if you have to. The game, to me, is perfect. I don't care about graphics, especially when they aren't exactly bad to begin with. That being said, the graphics are bound to turn some people off, and for that reason I don't think it's fair to award this game a 10. If you can see through a shallow aspect of this title, and you're a fan of the genre, you'll regret not trying this. Final Score - 9.9/10 Edited by Arayvenn, Dec 16 2010, 12:01 PM.

Now this is what I call a review. It's thorough, explanatory, and fairly unbiased. This is the kind of review that would get me interested in a game. I would try it, but I don't really have a good PS emulator, and I don't feel like digging one out. Also, being as it is a sequel to Chrono Trigger, I would assume it's similar thereto. As such, I'm not a big fan of that genre. Also, I don't really have time for more games right now. |

Actually, chrono fans hated it for not being similar. It's really a shame, Sqaure even released this statement. "Sorry for trying to do something new, we're very happy with what we've done with Cross. Thanks for falling in love with Trigger so much" Kato made a similar statement: "Cross is undoubtedly the highest quality Chrono that we can create right now. (I won't say the 'best' Chrono, but) If you can't accept that, then I'm sorry to say this but I guess your Chrono and my Chrono have taken totally different paths. But I would like to say, thank you for falling in love with Trigger so much. Of course, the fans of the original are very important, but what innovation can come about when you're bound to the past? I believe that gameplay should evolve with the hardware." I actually prefer this game to trigger :x Edited by Arayvenn, Dec 16 2010, 11:52 AM.

Interesting...but the other issues still apply. Maybe I'll try it once I run out of games to play again. |

Photobucket is garbage and wants me to pay money to use my own images here all of the sudden (even though it was never an issue for years).
See if I ever use Photobucket for anything ever again.
