This is an opinion based review, I am not a professional critic.

Story

You are special agent Francis York Morgan. You have been sent to Greenvale, a small rural town somewhere in Southern United States. You've been sent here because one of the towns beloved teens has been murdered. The case is very similar to others you've seen before, they all have something in common. Red seeds. The story for Deadly Premonition really is something special. I can only describe so much without spoiling anything. The truth is, it's a really deep story and has many twists and turns you actually won't see coming. That's a little rare for video games. It's really solid and will keep you entertained for the 20+ hours you'll be on the case.

Gameplay

It's very easy to see that the gameplay was heavily inspired by Resident Evil and Silent Hill. The game takes all these survival horror aspects, but it's not the main focus of the game. There will be combat areas where you'll fight "shadows" in a Resident Evil style combat, but that's nowhere near most of the game. The majority of the game is you exploring Greenvale. Greenvale is alive, all the citizens have their own schedules, you can interact with them as you wish, and the town is full of sidequests, collectibles and secrets. I'd compare it to the open world in the Grand Theft Auto series. If you're going for 100%, most of your time will be spent here. The one issue I have with the gameplay, is the control. They wen't the Resident Evil route, of stop and shoot. Moving around can seem kind of clunky too, but you get used to it. Other than that, I love everything about this. Combat and exploring Greenvale are both fun, they also reward you for doing the extras.

Graphics

The game struggles here. You can really tell it's a budget title. All the textures are ugly and look dated. The graphics have been compared to those of a PS1 launch title, I wouldn't go that far, but it's definitely very old. I can't even say that the design is nice, because it really isn't. I mean, some of Greenvale looks nice, but most of this game is just plain ugly. Everything from textures, to character design. I have nothing good to say.

Enjoyment and Verdict

I love this game. I really enjoyed my time with it. It was tons of fun solving the case, and doing everything Greenvale had to offer. The game has its flaws, there's no denying it, but it's so different that it deserves some credit. In a market cluttered with shooters, this really was a risk, and I believe it payed off. If you enjoy investigation games, or you're just looking for something a bit different, I'd strongly reccomend this. At 20 bucks, you can't go wrong.

Final Score - 9.0/10
