Elite Beat Agents is a music game made in 2005 for the Nintendo DS developed by iNiS. It is a rather under-rated game in my opinion, so I decided to make this review to inspire people to try it out.![]() Story: The game is divided into 18 Episodes, each containing the same basic story; someone facing a crisis, realizing they can't handle it on their own, and cry out for help--oh, I'm sorry, HEAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLP!!!! Thus the Elite Beat Agents arrive on the scene, and help the client out by doing one thing, and one thing only, dancing! The stories of these episodes are all extremely humorous, save for one in particular which I won't spoil for those who haven't played this game yet. However, they aren't all that creative. Gameplay: The Game is relatively simple. This game is very similar to Osu!, a game previously reviewed by thunderdude96. A stage normally consists of about 4 sections. Each section represents an individual challenge the client is trying to achieve as part of their entire crisis. At the top of the Touch Screen, there is an "Elite-o-Meter" which is divided into a Yellow segment, and a Red Segment. Throughout the entire stage, the Elite-o-meter is constantly depleting. If the meter is in the Yellow segment at the end of a section, the client overcomes their challenge. If it's in the Red Segment, however, they make screw-ups which cause them to fail the challenge, some of which are actually hilarious, and one in particular being a bit riskay (Look at the one on the right at 00:30). If at any point the Elite-o-meter is completely depleted, you fail the level and are subjected to a cutscene of the client failing to overcome their crisis, and I have to say, some of these make me feel like a real jerk for failing the level. ![]() So how do you keep the Elite-o-Meter in the Yellow? By tapping, sliding, and spinning to the music! On the Touch Screen, various markers will appear in 3 variations, Tap Markers, Phrase Markers, and Spin Markers. When a Tap Marker appears, you simply need to tap it with the stylus as the shrinking circle overlaps the White Circle on the marker itself. If you get the timing perfect, you get 300 points, if you're slightly early/late, you get 100 points, and if you're way too early/late, you get 50 points. When a Phrase Marker pops up, you need to keep your stylus on the...beach ball...thingermajiggerheimerbob as it rolls along the path of the Marker. When a Spin Marker pops up, you need to (get this) spin it as fast as you can until the gauges on the sides fill up completely, from which point continuously spinning it will get you Bonus points in increments of 1000 points per spin. The mechanics seem like they would get repetitive, but they are actually really fun and addicting. Graphics: The Graphics of this game mainly consist of artwork, which I find to be pretty good, certainly better than anything I could draw. The actual 3-D Models aren't all that bad either for the DS's standards. ![]() Soundtrack: Now when it comes to Music Games, it's pretty understandable that the Soundtrack is much more important than it normally is. I can safely say that isn't an issue with this game. All the songs in this game are actually Covers, and I'm pretty sure people are going to want to strangle me for this, but I prefer them over the original songs, with maybe one exception. "Makes no Difference" Cover by Vinn Lombardo "September" Cover by TC Moses "Survivor" Cover by April Harmony However, my absolute favorite thing about this game's Soundtrack is this. But that aside, the songs are all catchy and fun to listen to. Replayability: I'm just going to put it blunt, this game is extremely fun. The songs are catchy, the gameplay is just beyond fun, and this is probably the first music game where I've felt inspired to play on the harder difficulties. I love this game to death. Overall: Elite Beat Agents is a very fun game. It has humorous story-telling, addictive gameplay, and an amazing soundtrack. You should definitely try this game out, you won't be disappointed. Photobucket is garbage and wants me to pay money to use my own images here all of the sudden (even though it was never an issue for years).
See if I ever use Photobucket for anything ever again.
