So it's actually been a while since my last review here, and as such, I feel it is time to do a new one.![]() ____________________________ Gameplay: ____________________________ You've probably played some form of platformer by this point in your life. If not, then you are at least somewhat familiar with the concept of one. You can move left and right, jump (when it is permitted), and, depending on the game, you are capable of attacking your foes. What makes this game unique, though, is the way in which it incorporates experience as a method of increasing your ability to survive the harsh, harsh, harsh, harsh lands. Being a game with the theme of evolution, you attack your foes to gain experience, or "EVO", so you can "evolve" various components of the creature you play. Don't want four legs? Evolve it into a bipedal creature. Want to extend your reach? Give it a longer neck. Want to charge your foes so you don't have to bite them? Add a horn. Perhaps the game can be more appropriately labelled an action RPG, considering that there isn't much platforming going on. Your possibilities aren't exactly endless, what with this being a very old game, however, you do have quite a bit of customization available at your disposal. Make the game easier or more difficult as you please. If you want to ignore some enemies along your way, feel free to do so. However, it is worth mentioning that the game does get quite difficult as the game progresses. Without making use of a certain exploit which may or may not have been intended by the developers, the game can prove itself to be quite the formidable adversary, killing you nonstop at its discretion. In addition, without taking the time to grind for a bit (which, due to the game being broken up into chapters, can happen quite a few times as you evolve into a new species), you are quite susceptible to numerous and frequent deaths. In addition to your standard jumping on enemies ability common to most games reminiscent of platformers, you also have a bite that deals more damage than your jump (assuming you actually choose to upgrade your jaws and whatnot), and with a little exploration, you gain access to other abilities not available to you should you decide to simply always follow the paths presented to you. You are also given the ability to evolve, or, more appropriately, devolve, into a creature you were previously if you select to save a creature with the use of stones that can be found occasionally. ![]() ____________________________ Story/Plot: ____________________________ You are... something. Some special organism selected by Gaia to prove your worth to the Sun, her father. In order to be allowed into the land of Eden, you must overcome a long and difficult trial: to evolve and prove yourself to be the fittest, most capable creature. With Gaia as your guide throughout the ages and nothing but your own "natural" bodies and abilities at your disposal, you must face powerful creatures, ones who have been influenced by a strange power that is working to corrupt the process of natural evolution, though with the theme of survival of the fittest, you are also confronted with all that entails, be it extinctions, struggling species, and other such unfortunate aspects of the struggle for life. In order not to spoil the events of the story, I shall reveal no more. ____________________________ Music/Sound: ____________________________ Atmospheric while still sounding pretty neat, the music of this game is quite respectable. The music definitely suits the theme of the game, what with it being an evolution-based epic (not the modern kind of epic, though I guess the game and its music is pretty great). For the most part, the music of the game was highly enjoyable and quite varied in both mood and sound. The game doesn't make any real sacrifices with regard to attempting to achieve a certain style of sound and instead focuses solely on making its melodies put forth a tone to enhance the atmosphere. Overall, the music itself provides quite the memorable experience. With regard to the actual sound effects used, it seems the sound designers decided on simply going with what sounded right, and not necessarily natural, which probably worked in the game's favor and added to its charm. ![]() ____________________________ Graphics/Art ____________________________ The art style in this game appears to be aiming for a somewhat realistic representation of the various creatures present throughout this planet's history, albeit more expressive, to an extent, to display the reactions and emotions of the various creatures you encounter, like fish, amphibians, dinosaurs, and monkeys, though despite the comparative realism, it still manages to achieve a kind of cartoony feel to it, perhaps due to the aforementioned expressiveness of the faces. In addition, the environments are also natural in feel (except in some cases, where they intentionally dropped the realistic approach, to some degree, to fit with the various points in the game where such would be appropriate) and quite accurately represent the eras in which those stages take place (for the most part). Overall, the visuals look quite nice and are quite pleasing to the eye. ____________________________ Overall/Lifetime ____________________________ Overall, this game is thoroughly enjoyable. There might be a couple of frustrating moments for players who don't completely know what they're doing, but due to the relatively linear nature of the game, such moments are few and far between. The customization available to the player also enables you to do "challenge runs" of the game, in which you upgrade no aspects of the creature you play as, and due to the customization, the game has a bit of replayability via choosing to upgrade certain things as opposed to others. In the end, this game provides an unforgettable and highly enjoyable experience. ![]() Gameplay: 4/5 Story/Plot: 3/5 Music/Sound: 4/5 Graphics/Art: 4/5 Overall: 4/5 |

Photobucket is garbage and wants me to pay money to use my own images here all of the sudden (even though it was never an issue for years).
See if I ever use Photobucket for anything ever again.
