What do you think of when you hear "Pac-Man"? You think of this, of course. Posted Image

But what if I told you that the incomplete circle hero we all know and love is capable of going beyond the memorable (and somewhat repetitive) mazes that we were all accustomed to? Well, he is, and I am. In 1999, the Playstation recieved the title known as Pac-Man World. It introduced the Yellow Fellow (Unintentional rhyme) into 3-Dimensional Gaming as a rather decent platformer. It was decent, but I never beat it because of THAT GOD DA--I MEAN CONFOUNDING ANUBIS REX. However, I did enjoy the full extent of its sequel much more, so in case it isn't blatantly obvious, I'm doing a review on Pac-Man World 2.

...oh, and some versions came with a game called Pac-Man Vs., but nobody cares about that.

Story: The Ghost Gang, consisting of Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde, are all seen causing mischief within the rather peaceful Pac-Village. During the midst of these shenanigans, the Ghosts pick the 5 Golden Fruit from the Tree located in the center of Pac-Village. Unknowingly, they release an extremely powerful ghost known by the horrifyingly threatening name of Spooky. Spooky enlists the help of the Ghost Gang to destroy the Pac-People. Pac-Man wakes up the next morning to be told the backstory behind spooky by Professor Pac (In case it isn't obvious yet, there's a gimmick where everything has the word "Pac" in it.) Apparently, a Wizard created the Golden Fruit in order to seal away Spooky with the help of a knight known as Sir Pac-A-Lot. Pac-Man then treks all the way through Pac-Land and Ghost Island, Regaining the Golden Fruit as he goes. After going Full-Circle back to Pac-Village, Pac-Man faces off with Spooky and defeats him, bringing peace back to Pac-Land. A rather decent story, and the Voice-Acting in the CG Cutscenes is passable.

Gameplay: The game is a 3-D Platformer. Basic platformer controls apply (Move with the Control Stick, A to Jump, etc.) However, Pac-Man has a couple of semi-unique moves. Those being the Butt-Bounce (Ground Pound) and Rev Roll (Spin Dash). The game consists of 6 Worlds, Paradise Meadows, the obligatory introductory Forest Level, B-Doing Woods, a treetop area littered with B-Doings, Blade Mountain, An Ice World with two very unique levels, Magma Opus, A Volcano...with lava...and things..., Under the Sea, which is comprised solely of on-rails swimming levels, and Ghost Island, the stronghold of the Ghost Gang. Each level contains various collectibles, such as Pac-Dots, Various Fruits (Insert Goron50 reference here), and Tokens. While the goal of each level is to get to the end, the secondary goal is to get all the Pac-Dots and Fruits. There are also Galaxians located in certain levels. Nabbing these takes you to a Maze, obviously based on the original arcade games. Completing these mazes allows you to keep the Galaxian and complete the level. Tokens are required to access special features in Pac-Village, such as ports of older Pac-Man games, a Sound Test, and an Art Museum containing Concept Art of the game. There are 8 Tokens located in the level itself, but two Bonus Tokens can only be acquired by collecting all the Pac-Dots and Fruits (And Galaxian, if there is one) in a level, and by completing a Time Trial of the level. Each World consists of 3 Levels and a Boss Fight with one of the ghosts. I really like the level themes and various gimmicks, but I do have two complaints. For one, there is a HUGE difficulty spike starting at the fourth boss, "Clyde in the Caldera". On my first time playing, it took me forever to beat that boss. But it is a challenge, and challenge is OK in my book. I just wish the difficulty would remain consistent. Another complaint I have is the On-Rails levels. These levels are a pain to collect everything in, especially the Underwater levels. But those aside, if you just play to get to the end of the level, and don't care about the fruits and such, then it's much more enjoyable. The controls are also pretty solid.

Graphics: The game looks pretty good for Gamecube standards. There are a couple of very beautiful backdrops located in levels such as Butane Pain. However, there is an issue I have in the second to last level, Ghost Bayou. In this level, you have to navigate on very narrow pathways over a swamp that kills you instantly if you fall in. The problem is that said pathways blend in so well with the swamp that I have to adjust the brightness on my TV just to distinguish them from the swamp. Other than this one level, I like how the game looks.

Music: I. LOVE. THIS. GAME'S. SOUNDTRACK. I can't think of another game that has music so fitting with the environment. Every World has a main theme, with each level containing a remix of said main theme. I'll post my favorite remixes of the main themes below. (Courtesy of Fievel. Thank you, Fievel. ^_^ )

Pac-Dot Pond

B-Doing Woods

Blade Mountain

Into the Volcano

Yellow Pac-Marine

Night Crawling

So that should pretty much sum up my thoughts on the music.

Replay Value: I think this game is decently replayable. If you're a completionist, the Fruits can be decently challenging to collect all in one go. The Arcade games are also pretty fun, you might even pop the game in just to play some Pac-Mania if you so desire.

Overall: Pac-Man World 2 is a very under-rated game in my opinion. I haven't played enough of the other two games in the series to know if they're any better or not. However, I do know that this game is definitely worth a run through. Even with the huge difficulty spike, I still love this game, and am glad that I finally got it back after so long.
