I’M rAD
I played the original Kid Icarus one fateful day. If I could sum up my experience with that game, it would probably be something like this.

A good 4 years after my ragequit, I decided to pick it up again, and being a bit more mature this time around, here was my most recent reaction.

And to think all the raging could stem from one simple little video game.

Story: In the land of...whereverville as I like to call it, there were 2 Goddesses: Palutena, the Goddess of Light, and Medusa, the Goddess of Darkness. Believe it or not, Palutena was a kind ruler who cared very much for the people of whereverville, whereas Medusa was vile, and hated the humans. She even went so far as to dry their crops and turn them to stone. (She is Medusa, after all) Palutena, obviously displeased with all of the mischief that Medusa had been causing, transformed her into an ugly beast and banished her to the Underworld. This quickly backfired on her, as Medusa had banded with all the other creatures of the Underworld, and quickly kidnaps Palutena, imprisoning all of the inhabitants of SkyWorld in the UnderWorld. Pit, a young angel, it gifted with a sacred bow from Palutena, and must trek all the way back to SkyWorld to put Medusa in her place. Pretty decent story, but it really just seems like a dressed up "save the girl" plotline.

Gameplay: Standard 2-D platformer controls apply, so I won't go into detail over those. The game consists of 3 Worlds: The UnderWorld, The OverWorld A.K.A. Whereverville, and SkyWorld. Strangely, The UnderWorld and SkyWorld are vertical tower-like levels, whereas the OverWorld is a standard side-to-side level. Pit's bow starts out pathetically weak, not even being able to travel the whole screen. To fix this, there are various doors located throughout each level. These can consist of Shops where you can spend hearts gained from beating enemies, Enemy rooms full of...Groucho Marx glasses, Hot Springs, which unfortunately do not cause Pit to have an orgasm upon eye contact, and most importantly, Trial Rooms. Here a man challenges Pit to endure an onslaught of Monoliths, if you're successful, you can get 1 of 3 power ups for your Bow: The Sacred Bow, which is a range upgrade, the Flaming Arrow, which does double damage, and the Crystal Rod, which causes 2 Crystals to revolve around Pit, killing anything they touch. Certain doors also contain Chambers in which a man will give you a free power upgrade to your Bow, with a Palette Swap to boot! After 3 levels, each world ends with a Fortress, in which you have to navigate a labyrinthine area and locate the boss of the Area. All in all, there's only one problem I have with this game; The difficulty. This game is HARD. In the UnderWorld and SkyWorld, if you scroll the screen up, you can't scroll it back down; If you fall to the bottom of the screen, it counts as a bottomless pit, A.K.A. INSTANT DEATH. There are no checkpoints, so you have to start from the very beginning EVERY TIME YOU DIE. Remember those upgrades to your Bow you had to get from those Trial Rooms? There are enemies who STEAL them from you. You start the game with 7 HP. To top it all off, Hot Springs and Healing Items are very far and few between. Thankfully, to balance this out, you have unlimited lives, and every time your score reaches a certain number at the end of a level, you gain another 7 HP. Overall, I think this game controls fine, but the difficulty level is just too hard early on.

Graphics:NOTE
I HAVE NOT PLAYED THE 3DS RERELEASE OF THIS GAME, SO I WILL NOT TALK ABOUT THE GRAPHICS OF THAT VERSION.

Honestly, the game looks pretty good for an NES Title, but there's one problem I have that carries over to almost every NES game in its library; Lack of backgrounds. Honestly, I get tired of seeing nothing but a black screen after a while. I mean, would it really have been so hard just to put a few clouds or something in there? It just feels very bland.
Soundtrack: Now the soundtrack is something to talk about! It's overall pretty catchy! There isn't much music in the game, but it all sounds great!

UnderWorld

Fortress

SkyWorld

Replay Value: Honestly, I don't think many people would want to replay a game this difficult that often. It's pretty short, anyway. Although it's hard to tell with how long it took me to get past some of the harder levels.

Overall: I think Kid Icarus is good, but the difficulty is just too big an issue for me to say it's great. That, along with the rather bland graphics, just leaves me in an awkward spot. It's good, but don't expect the most enjoyable experience if you don't like difficult games.

RAINBOW HYPER!!!
Very nice review. Pretty much sums up what I think about that game. To be honest, I don't know how that series managed to make a comeback. The game was good, but not the most memorable game I've played from the NES. Also, I always hated how they use hearts for currency. I mean, when I see a monster drop a heart, I think "Yes! life refill!"
Anyways, well done!
