I’M rAD
So...Since I'm bored, I'm making another review. We all(?) played Wii Sports when we got our Wii, and it was an ok way of showing us the Wii's capabilities. But it felt just a weee (totally avoided a lame pun there) bit lacking in substance. At E3 2008, the Wii Motion Plus peripheral was announced along with another launch title to show off its capabilities. And this is what I will be reviewing today. Wii Sports Resort!

Plot: This game has no plot.

Gameplay: Wii Sports Resort contains 12 different minigames. I'll cover each one below.

Swordplay: My second favorite of the bunch. Basically, you use the Wii Remote as a sword, and because of the Motion Plus, you have 1:1 motion controls. This means that you have complete control of the sword's movement. You can also block by holding down the B button. This game has 3 modes: Duel, Speed Slice, and Showdown. Duel is just a duel between you and the AI (Or a friend in Multiplayer.) In Speed Slice, an object appears in front of you and the AI (Once again, or a friend) and you are told to slice it in a specific direction, the first one to slice it in that specific direction wins the round. The first one to win 10 rounds wins the game. In Showdown, you are pitted against an entire army of AI opponents. You're goal is to knock them all out. If you get hit 3 times, you lose.

Wakeboarding: This is pretty simple. You use the Wii Remote as a handle and tilt it to move left & right. The goal is to get as many points as possible by doing tricks. When you cross the wake of water that the boat leaves behind, you shake the remote to do a trick. The more tricks you do in succession, the faster the boat goes, and the higher you jump after hitting the Wake. If you mess up the landing after a jump, you slow down.

Frisbee: In this game, you use the Wii Remote as a Frisbee. You hold down B to ready a throw, and release it while swinging the remote as if you were really throwing a Frisbee to throw. This game has 2 modes: Frisbee Dog, and Frisbee Catch. In Frisbee Dog, your goal is to get as many points as possible by throwing the Frisbee at a Target so your dog can catch it. Your point score is based on how close to the center of the target you are. In Frisbee Golf, you pretty much just play golf with the Frisbee instead of a golf ball.

Archery: Archery is one of the few games that requires the nunchuck. If you have even a basic grasp of archery, you know what to do; Shoot an arrow at a target and try to get as close to the center as you can. You set your aim by pressing A, and pull the Nunchuck back while holding Z to pull back on the string. Release, and watch your arrow fly!

Basketball: My third-favorite game. This game has two modes: Three-Point contest, and Pickup game. In 3-Point Contest, you simply try to make as many baskets as you can within the Time Limit. You shoot the basketball by swinging the remote back over your head to jump, and forward to shoot. The controls actually feel very smooth and natural. In Pickup game, you play a 3-on-3 game between you and the AI/your friend. You press the + Control Pad and the A button to pass the ball to your two teammates if you have the ball. Swinging the remote while the other team is in possession of the ball initiates a steal. Pressing B gives you a chance to shoot. If your on the Defense, you can swing the remote in an attempt to block the ball.

Table Tennis: This game is actually quite different from Tennis in Wii Sports, but the same controls apply for the most part. In this game, there are two modes: Vs. and Return Challenge. Vs. is just a game between you and the AI/Friend. Return Challenge is a challenge to see how many balls you can hit before missing one.

Golf: If you played the Golf in the original Wii Sports, it's essentially the same thing with one difference. Twisting the remote while swinging affects the ball's trajectory. Other than that, it's the exact same game.

Bowling: As with Golf, this is the exact same game from Wii Sports with one difference. Twisting the remote mid-roll affects the ball's spin. Nothing else is changed.

Power Cruising: Another Game that utilizes the Nunchuk. The goal of this game is to traverse an obstacle course and make it to the end. You hold the Wii Remote and Nunchuk like the handles of the Power Cruiser. You accelerate by pressing the A or B buttons, and you can activate a boost by twisting the Wii Remote or Nunchuk.

Canoeing: I really don't like this game. Basically, your goal is to paddle through a course as fast as you possibly can. You use the Wii remote as an Oar to paddle. Quite frankly, this is the only game where I feel the control doesn't work well.

Cycling: This is quite odd for a controller that utilizes your arms. Basically, this is a race through a predetermined track around the track. You swing the Wii Remote & Nunchuk up and down to pedal, and you tilt them left or right to turn. Pedaling really fast causes your stamina to deplete. If it depletes all the way, you'll stop for a good 3-4 seconds. However, if you coast behind another biker, you'll draft them, and refill your stamina much faster.

Air Sports: My favorite game in the entire collection. This game has 3 modes: Skydiving, Island Flyover, and Dog Fight. The first time you start up the game, you're forced to do Skydiving, In this game, you control your Mii as they plummet down to Wuhu Island. You control it twisting and turning your Wii Remote as if you're actually holding your Mii. The goal is to link up with other Skydivers and take pictures with them. At the end, you have to channel your inner Superman 64 and go through Rings. In Island Flyover, you get to fly a Plane around the entirety of Wuhu Island for 5 minutes. You control the plane by holding the Wii Remote like a paper airplane. You can tilt it up and down to ascend and descend, and twist it left and right to turn. As you fly around, you can visit various sightseeing spots on the island, called i Points. Flying directly into an i Point allows you to collect it. The more i Points you collect, the more features you unlock, such as being able to fly in the evening or at night, turning your plane from a one-seater into a two-seater, and even giving you a (pointless) island resort home! Dogfight is essentially just a multiplayer adaptation of Island Flyover, where you have to shoot your opponent until their HP (Represented by a balloon on their plane's backside) reaches zero.

Overall, I love all of the games except for Canoeing. The Motion Controls work really well overall, and there are various challenges to accomplish in each game, such as hitting the elusive secret targets in Archery.

Graphics: This game looks pretty good for the Wii. Not the absolute best, certainly not as good as games like Super Mario Galaxy, but still really well done.

Soundtrack: To be honest, the game's soundtrack isn't all that memorable, and some games don't even have music.

(I can't find any of the music online, so I can't show you anyting.)

Replay Value: The Replay Value is great! I can say I most definitely got my money's worth buying this. The games are very fun, and I'm still trying to complete some of the challenges to this day!

Overall: All in all, Wii Sports Resort is a solid title that did a great job of showcasing the Wii MotionPlus. The games are fun overall, and I find myself popping this game in every now and then. However, the game certainly lacks in terms of Music. I'd certainly recommend you play it.
