I’M rAD
When I was a lad, I once got a PC game called "Sega Smash Pack 2". In it were various Genesis Titles including Sonic 2, Kid Chameleon, Vectorman 2, and Phantasy Star. There was also a game called "Shining Force". Considering I was like 6, I didn't understand anything in this game, so I didn't play it much. About 4 years later, I gave it another chance, and I got through a good chunk of the game, but then I lost the disk. Another 4 years later, I downloaded this game off of the Virtual Console, and I finally beat it! So here's my review on Shining Force!

Story: In the land of Rune, the powers of Darkness and Light were fighting over control of the world. Commanding the powers of Darkness was Dark Dragon (Loving the creativity there). The Powers of Light were controlled by the Ancients. After a bunch of fighting, The Ancients defeated Dark Dragon, and sealed him in another Dimension. But Dark Dragon wasn't going to have that, so he told them that he would return in 1,000 years. However, people didn't think much of that, and he was eventually forgotten. The 1,000 years passed, and coincidentally, the Kingdom of Runefaust fledged all-out war on the rest of Rune. The forces of Good prayed for a hero who would Wield the Powers of Light to defeat the forces of Runefaust. Enter Max, an accomplished Swordsman. He has been given the role of leading the Shining Force, a group of well-known and noble warriors. Consisting of...*

Luke: A young warrior who was always bullied in school for having a stupid-looking nose. He enlisted in the Shining Force to finance his lifelong dream of running an upper-class Italian Restaurant.

Ken: Roughly 3 centuries before the events of this game, a freak accident caused a genetic disruption, creating a strange race of centaur-like beings. Ken is secretly searching for a cure to this mutation.

Tao: A young mage who was home-schooled. (Hogwarts was too expensive for her family) Because she excels in Fire-based magic, she is the only being capable of beating "Through the Fire and Flames" 100% on Expert mode...with the controller upside-down...underwater...

Hans: Hans is a pretty cool guy, but that's about it.

Lowe: Lowe is a longtime friend of Max. He actually wasn't initially supposed to be part of the Shining Force, but he forced Max to let him tag along.

*M.G.L.'s character bios may not be 100% accurate. If you don't like the bios I made up gave for the characters, then that's just hard cheese.

This is a pretty good plot, but nothing too spectacular.

Gameplay: The gameplay is very similar to the Fire Emblem series, with some moderate differences, most of which I prefer to Fire Emblem. Shining Force is a Tactical RPG in which you command an entire battalion to fight an opposing battalion of monsters. The game is divided into 2 sections: Town Sections and Battle Sections. When you're in a town, you can buy items, weapons, talk to people, recruit new members of the Shining Force, fiddle around with your current party, and do other various things. When you're on the Battlefield, you control your squadron's individual movements in order to achieve one overall goal, be it to defeat one specific enemy unit, or to reach a location at the other end of the map. It's not too hard to get used to the game mechanics if you've already played an RPG. As I said earlier, while this game does bear a striking resemblance to Fire Emblem, there are a few differences from that series that I really like. For one, when a character dies, they're not dead forever, you can revive them. Also, I just like the fact that you actually visit towns in this game. In Fire Emblem, it just goes from Battle to Battle, and I just prefer having an actual break in between battles. Overall, I like how the game plays, but there are a few flaws I have with it. For one, this game suffers from what many RPGs usually contain; Excessive amounts of grinding. In order to stand any chance against later battles, you'll have to grind in battles for a quite a while. This is tedious and boring and not fun. Also, This game has a lot of points of no return. I understand that plot-wise, there's no real reason to go back to previous cities in this type of game, but I really like just being able to go back to a city so I can buy a certain weapon.

Graphics: This game looks pretty good overall. I like the amount of detail that was put into the battle animations. The overworld graphics are also pretty good, at least for the Genesis.

Soundtrack: This game's soundtrack is good. There are a couple of fanfares that play that I really like because of how catchy they are. And the music is actually really good.

Intro

Attack

Battle 3

Replay Value:Personally, I find the Replay Value to be the only place where this game lacks. I've only completed the game once, and I've only just recently started a new file. This is the kind of game where you have to wait a few months to play again, so I can at least cut it a little slack for that.

Overall: Overall, Shining Force is a pretty good RPG. It has its flaws here and there, but I still like it quite a bit. If you can get past the grinding, I'd give it a shot, you can download it off the Wii's Virtual Console.
