Hello members, My name is Peter. however I usually respond to Nightjar. I grew up on a wheat & sheep farm so my love for the country was seeded back then. (Actually my known roots go back to 1542 and through the ages my direct clan were always on the land. My Grandfather arrived here in 1889 and settled in Northampton, West Australia..) http://www.geocities.com/onyx1551/Robhistory.pdf Have always had a strong connection with mother earth and all it has to offer. From an early age my love for our flora and fauna has been of great interest to me and remains with me to this day. My introduction to Gold Detecting began back in the early 80’s with the purchase of a Garrett Deepseeker, progressing to the Garrett Groundhog, Whites VSat, SD 2000, SD 2100, GP3500 through to this present day GPX4000. During this period, a number of years were taken up with Dry Blowing. Had limited success and reverted to detecting when the body began to feel the strain from shovelling for hours on end. In 95’ purchased a 200 hectare Prospecting Lease which has become our home base for trips throughout the year. Being 1000km’s from home restricts our visits to 3 or 4 times a year. We now have a very comfortable campsite with 3 onsite caravans and a large shack which encompasses the caravans to protect them from the elements. We have hot & cold showers, (rain water) gathered from the 20M X 20M + roof area into approx 8000 litre storage tanks. Most of the comforts of home, without the dreaded TV. We actually spend our evenings talking and reminiscing over the days events. We have encouraged birds to nest around our camp by hanging nesting boxes and a hollow log. Presently we have a family of parrots (28’s) who are into the 5th year of nesting. Mudlarks have built and raised families. In 2006 we finally saw our first family of Nightjar’s take up residence. This accomplishment is far greater than a kilo of gold. The bird baths in surrounding trees are visited daily by Miner Birds, Pink & Grey Galahs, Bower Birds, Finches, Crows, Red Robins, Butcher Birds and Magpies. Within a few days of arriving and topping up the water baths we wake to the sound of music. The Magpie especially has a pleasant morning song. The ultimate plan is to have a pair of Wedge Tailed Eagles nesting, this is the ultimate challenge. Resident Bungarras waddle in around lunchtime to drink and lay in the half 60 litre drum we have buried into the ground. Today I enjoy the outback and goldfields and what it has to offer and gold finds are an added bonus. Regards Peter

Hello to you all, I found a poem Sulli wrote just before we ventured out into Central Australia back in 2005. Sulli is writing a book "Lasseteria" about the life and demise of Harold Lasseter. Trip through Central Australia into Lasseter Country, July/ August 2005. Way outback where the Nightjar is Travelling east on Lasseter biz Searching gold reefs, said enormous And under Lasseter’s campfires, also numerous For those golden specimens and clues obscure To a glittering bonanza in the ‘Centre By Christopher lake and Circus Water Detour to Lasseter’s Cave he aught to To ponder Harry’s ghostly lamentation Of bolting camels and starvation Then onwards east to Winters Glen Where the prospecting legend met his end Ever eastwards to the Olgas Not like Terry bashing mulga Nightjars’ road is now well travelled With trackside flats he should not be troubled Unless he turns north to Lake Amadeus Then his disappearance will confound us On to the ‘Alice for a resupply Then northwest to the Tanami Where golds been found, more or less Maybe a chance for a detector test At Hall’s creek he’ll have better luck Before he tackles the infamous Canning track And all this on one slab of Emu Bitter Never happen, maybe later When he’s back in the Golden West Successfully reflecting on the severest test Of man and wheels and detector too But no doubt, his laptop maps have seen him through Then onto keyboard with fingers pounding Via this forum with tales astounding Of his journey through central Oz Then we’ll know where the Nightjar was Robert Ross 2005 Regards Peter |
