Around 1998 I was living in South Australia and went on a trip with Doug Stone to WA Goldfields. Hired one of his 2100's and managed to find 14 grams. On arrival back home I realized that I had been bitten by something while in WA . Infection set in and I could not concentrate on my Redback casting business. My wife questioned my wild spending on things she could not understand and I became edgy and guilty in the recognition that I had become a very different person in such a short time. I finally went to my local GP and explained what had been happening to me.He listened intently and expelled a sigh. Seeing the distress in my eyes he put a comforting hand on my shoulder, then with a smile he said ,''YOU HAVE BEEN BITTEN BY THE GOLD BUG'' Now living in Perth ,I go wandering in the goldfields 2or3 times a year , dont find much but have a good time,.I enjoy the bush and photographing wildlife while out there. In my spare time I play around with a coin detector and pick up some good bits at times. Dick Smith |
