Hello members, My first attempt of detecting was after purchasing a Garrett Deepseeker back in the 80's, I visited an old run down historic building in Rockingham, WA. After digging many nails and other junk I got a signal near the base of a weeping willow tree, the resulting dig unearthed an old Army Hat Badge that I have to this day. This find, at the time, gave me a great feeling, that has remained with me to this day! Who was the old "digger" who lost this badge? I couldn't help but pause for a moment and think about the history involved leading up to his loss? |

Hi Peter, Rockingham was the step-off army base for the AIF at the commencement of WWI. Also it was a major army base during WWII. Looking at the badge I would say to the best of my knowledge, it possibly belonged to a soldier from WWII. The Australian Commonwealth Miltary Forces badge of WWI was the same in appearance, but slightly smaller in size. The old golf course which covered the area from the new shopping centre to Patterson road was the position of the main camp & where Port Kennedy & the south part of Warnbro is was the firing range. ![]() This is an AIF Hat Badge from WWI The 1904 edition of Australia's 'rising sun' hat badge. This version featuring the words "Australian Commonwealth Military Forces" replaced the 1902 2nd edition badge, and remained as issue for both World War 1 and World War 11, until the 4th iteration of the badge was issued in 1949 after World War II. This is the last of the burnished copper badges. Subsequent issue were brass or gilt. Cheers Ted |

Hello Nightjar, A very interesting find. Perhaps the soldier was camping under that tree. But with the building close by I doubt that theory. Maybe a child playing with his fathers army stuff, lost it there. Maybe it was placed under as a memorial of some kind. It congers too many posibilities to know for sure. Maybe the tree was smaller when it was lost there, it looks like an old badge probably early digger times back when they put down their picks for a gun to fight for this great country of ours. It must have a lot of sentimental value. Pin it on your hat while detecting, it may bring you great luck! Good find Peter! Cheers Dave |
