Hi all,
After updating to the GPX 4000 I found my old charging unit out of date as well, so, currently have a new one under construction. (Pic attached)
Won't have batteries, chargers and a tangle of wires drifting around in the back of my little truck.
This unit will incorporate the following in one neat package;
64 Watt Solar Panel (Will add another panel at a later date)
Two 6volt heavy duty batteries in series (In box under this unit- not shown in pic)
Solar panel regulator
Ability to charge from vehicle alternator while mobile
Ammeter showing Solar input
Voltmeter registering battery content
Power lead for Engel fridge
600Watt inverter
12V/6V trickle charger
4 cigarette plugs
4X 240 volt adaptor plugged into inverter.
Tray to secure detector batteries and chargers while travelling.
Fuse panel for all individual circuits
Will post a completion pic when it is all done.

Cheers

Peter

Hi Peter,
Nice set-up. I've got something similar with a couple of 6 volt deep cycle batteries in series which give me a capacity of 190 amps @ 12 volts. Also coupled to this is an 800 watt 12/240 volt inverter . I use the 2 pin low voltage polarised sockets for my supply outlets. This is all connected to a couple of 80 watt solar panels with a 10amp solar regulator for charging. While on the road the charging system is via a rotronics charger connected to the vehicle alternator.
This set-up works very well & I've had no problems running my 12 volt appliances (including a 60 ltr. Trailblaza fridge) several weeks at a time when camping away from home. Pics of the set-up can be found on my web site:

Hi Ted,
what a great website you have.
just love all the pics of your travels,
sort of makes me want to go to those places!
you sure are well travelled and well equiped to match.

Hi Nightjar,
Terrific setup,
will it be finished by your planned Nov trip?
id love to see it when you pop in for coffee.
Ill have to put an order in for one just like it,
with the exception of the 4000 chargers,

all the best fellas!
Don't wish it was easier, wish you were better.
Don't wish for less problems, wish for more skills.
Don't wish for less challenges, wish for more wisdom.

Great site Ted,
Maybe we can get together and talk over how you developed your site layout?
My site sure could do with lots of renovation?
Going in now to reciprocate and add your site.
Cheers
Peter

Hi Peter,

No problems with getting together over a couple of beers & giving your web page a bit of an uplift. I have got a few graphics programs I use that you are welcome to use. Just email me or give me a ring. As you know I'm just around the corner & usually home most days of the week unless I've gone bush & thanks for the reciprical too.

Hi Gypsy,

Glad you like my web site'. Yes I've clocked up a few few miles over the years & seen just about every bit of good 'ol Aussie there is to see. Being a fair dinkum one I always say to folks "Have a look at your own backyard before you travel to others."

Hi all,
The battery box and associated electrics are now put together in compact unit.
The last trip bush was in my mates Cruiser, after the first day we had leads and chargers etc in a tangled mess.
Next trip away this little unit will be positioned on the back of my little truck and life will be simple.
Have included a trickle battery charger in this unit to supplement charge at night time when we have the generator running.
Gypsy now I have the bugs ironed out it will be a simple matter to put one together for you. When Andy holds a service and buries his Extreme it will be a simple matter to change over to 4500 charging?

MERRY CHRISTMAS and all the very best in the NEW YEAR...

Hi all,
Time sure slips away. Over 12 months since I posted previous pic, here is the latest version incorporating the 4500 batteries and the Lucky Lark. Also upgraded the Solar regulator.

Almost 3 years on this unit has never let us down, the only change was to mount a 12V deep cycle battery under the ute tray together with the auxillary starting battery.
Removing the two 6V deep cycle batteries from the original setup reduced onboard weight by about 30kgs, may not seem a lot but as we all know every kg helps when loading up your vehicle & trailer/van for another long haul.

Cheers
Peter
