Welcome to "Chappy" our newest member and all those who preceded him. We appreciate your membership and look forward to your stories about life in the goldfields. Regardless of your experience all input is welcome. We can all learn something new by asking and help to develop others by posting information relevent to all aspects of detecting. The actual swinging of the detector is only a miniscule event in the over all equation. We need bush, driving, navigation and many more skills to get us out there and back safely and hopefully with some nuggets in our jars. Looking forward to reading the new posts. Regards Peter |

Hi everyone I have never posted in a group like this before so I hope it all goes well :>) I live in the northern suburbs of Perth with my family. People I have spoken to about this topic of prospecting suggest that I might like to try areas around Yalgoo first as it is in "easy" reach from where we live (any other suggestion welcome). I have been yearning to go out prospecting for quite a few years (bough a miner's right about 10 years ago and it keeps on winking at me!) and now the kids are older and much more independant I think it's time to start getting organised. My thoughts are to acquire all of the equipment over a period of time and learn as much about the relative skills of camping and bushcraft by going on various camping trips and so forth (I have done a fair bit many years ago but in east Africa - similar climate and conditions). I have a tiny 4 wheel drive at the moment (Suzuki Sierra) which definitely needs upgrading to a much larger version before we get more serious!! I suppose it will take me a while to get properly organised - perhaps another 12 months or so I suppose. Well that's enough of paragraph beginning in "I"! Here's looking forward to chatting with other folks of like mind and reading your posts. Cheers for now. Paul |

Hi Kath Thanks for the reply. So Quick! I live in Tapping - one of the new areas (not so far to drive to the Murchison ).Thanks for the suggestion of meeting up somewhere. I think we will definitely give that serious consideration! It would be a great way of starting out. I must admit that I wonder how you go about starting to find somewhere to go prospecting. Do you just drive up there and pitch the tent/caravan or whatever?? I would feel a bit odd just doing that having never done it before so going with others to start would be terrific. Cheers Paul |

Hi Paul, Just heard of Tapping a few days ago..have a daughter-in-law who has a brother, wife & kids who have recently bought a house there. Well it sure would be great if we could just take off bush & choose a spot & set camp! Yes a trip out would be best as we do lots of research for where we can go...involves also contacting mines to get permission.....informing pastorilists...& often applying fo a section 20A form.....takes time.We do know not everyone does these things BUT we personally would not feel comfortable going onto someones lease etc without permission. We always try to do the right thing before we head bush & while there obey any rules..like removing our rubbish, filling in our detector holes, opening & shutting gates to how they were. That way WE feel comfortable. Oh another thing is pastorilists need to know we are on the land because they shoot goats etc....last time we were out they were shooting at one area we went to. Can't wait to head out for a detect again myself!..Keep reading etc & we hope you also enjoy this great past-time. Cheers, Kath |

Hi Kath Thanks for that. Yes of course a lot of homework needs to be done first as you say. Even with that though - where to start!!? I look forward to reading as much about it as I can! I'll probably read a fair bit more before I go asking lots of stupid question though. Cheers for now Paul |

Hi Kath Sorry for the delay in replying. Haven't checked back here for a while. I didn't expect any replies so soon!! I had thought it might take me a year or so, realistically speaking, to get a suitable vehicle, prepare it and then get camping and safety gear together (I have pertty much nothing at the moment so I'm starting from scratch!). I guess most of the good areas are remote from Perth so they would require some serious gear? I was wondering which areas would be good to get to from Perth. I though I saw some pictures of gold prospecting at Toodyay which would be great as it's not far from here but that was a couple of years back and they seen to have been removed from the site. Wouldn't that be handy? I suppose that we would need at least 10 - 14 days allowing for some travelling time and plenty of time to do some prospecting. What do you think? Do you have any thoughts about locations. I think that even some kind of "Dummy run" might be interesting just from a learning point of view but it might not be as interesting to some. Paul |

Hello Paul, Did a bit of a search on gold around Toodyay, and yes, payable gold was found there in 1931. Would imagine the site is private property so you would need to seek permission from the farmer? Click on link below; http://www.hesperianpress.com/booklist/tit...oodyay_gold.htm Probably the nearest present goldfields to you would begin at Payne's Find on the Gt Northern Hwy between Wubin and Mt Magnet. Good luck in your new venture. Cheers Peter |

Hi Peter Thanks for looking at that. Yes I thought I'd seen recent pictures on the net with gold nuggets from somewhere around there. From what you say it sounds unlikely that the owner will allow anyone on their land? I suppose it's worth asking as they can only say no. It would be really handy to have such a local spot eh? Is there a standard type of letter format that you use for this type of request? Otherwise there is always the option of the Paynes Find etc. as you say. By the way, have you found a new home for that GPX 4000 yet? It looks mighty tempting but I have to finish off some landscaping first!! Cheers Paul |

Hi Gypsy Margret River looks ok to me! I'll grab a copy of that book if I can. Thanks for that. Have you seen this page?: http://margaretriver.yourguide.com.au/news...ffe/314490.aspx It also mentions Dusborough as a likely area. Are there pictures of nuggets in the book or did you see them at first hand? Cheers Paul |

Gypsy Well that's fascinating isn't it? I've often wondered when I was down that way what lay beneath the surface. It's a good place to go in the warmer times of the year. Not as hot as where you are I imagine. Good luck with that. I've spotted that book you mentioned to me. Miners Den have it for about $30. I'll be ordering it shortly Cheers Paul |
