After looking looking at all the picks available and their high prices i decided to make my own.
I made the pick out of an old plow disk.
The disk was 4mm thick
The pick head is just oner 300mm long
The scraping face is 145 mm
The handle is 760 mm
Took me 2 hours to make...the handle was just an old shovel handle i had lying around that i put in my wood lathe and brought back to life

Hi Saltbush,
When you made your pic what type of welding rod did you use eg: multicraft, low hydrogen or did you use a mig welder?
I would imagine the plow disc would be made of a hard wearing metal.

Cheers

Hi Alan
I just used some standard mild steel welding rods for attaching the handle
The actual plow disk would be made out pretty good steel i would imagine.Good steel being high carbon steel that's been heat treated and stuff.

hi duro.
i have a pick made out of a broken car spring, the spring is harden so all you have to do is cut it to the length you want, cut a point on one end with a oxy and clean it up with a grinder, weld on a handle, wrap tape the tennis players use on there rachets or a handle bar grip of a bisicle, this is what i use as a spare..bards :D

Hi bards,
that's a good idea too, i might try and make both using the plough disc and the spring and see which works better for me.

Cheer's for that

Plow disc pick here, used S/S welding rods and a 7lb hammer handle was fitted. You will note that I added another layer of disc top and bottom on the point, this is the part of a pick that takes the most of the digging and this added it works a treat and to date it hasn't failed even after some serious digging. **If you attempt this do not weld across the rear of the tip additions. The first photo clearly shows this.**

why is it that the ends of the reinforcing triangles should not be welded?

Morning Longfella,
Welding across the back of the extra tips can weaken the pick at this point due "undercut" and "hardening" of the steel which will become brittle and snap off under load.
Same principal as welding on a vehicle chassis, no welding at right angles to the chassis channels.

Cheers

Wasn't any need for a big pick this trip none of the nugs found were any deeper than a few scrapes. :(

Good luck & safe travels
Peter
