Hi I'M Bill from Quinns Rocks WA also with a base in Geraldton. My wife and I travelled across the deserts of Australia this year and I decided to get a metal Detector and a Miners right for an interest. Luckily I had a old friend in Cue who showed my how to detect and what to do. I did eventually find a piece of gold specimen at Old Halls Creek. after 10000k s of dirt road! You are however very limited in other states such as the Northern Territory for metal detecting and perhaps that is another forum topic, but we in WA seriously need to protect our current rights to prospect. I joined this forum when I returned and have just returned a few weeks ago from an overseas trip so now I can start to participate and learn from the incredible information that people share here!! I am also currently developing a free fishing database application download for a friend's website and I want to utilize the development process to develop a metal detecting activity database application. A database that is simple to enter data into that is a solid record for analysis and future detecting trips. If you had your wish what would YOU include in a database of that nature? Some of the obvious things are; - Goldfield or Locality name - GPS Waypoints - Area Detected Boundaries - Scanned Mudmap - Google or other map of area - results of prospecting - Gold or minerals found - Host rock - Geology of the area - Photos - Tengraph lease details - Land owner Contact details. I might as well make the database as useful as possible to everyone who wants to keep their own records. Maybe that is one way I can return the input from members in these forums, it's really a great forum. Looking forward to meeting people as time goes by. Bill |

Good morning Bill and welcome to the forum. You will find some helpful people here to guide you on your prospecting dream. The data base is a great idea however you must understand that any area prospectors give a clue too, they will have thoroughly cleaned it out before posting information. Having said that, this is still valuable information that may lead to a new find in an adjacent area. Looking forward to your contributions in the near future. All the best, you are now another who has come down with the incurable disease- Gold Fever! Christmas cheers Peter |

Hi Bill & a big welcome to you. This IS a great forum, & like you are discovering, lots of good info & helpful members. The database sure sounds interesting. You must keep us informed of your progress. Maybe next time you have time while in Geraldton we can meet for a chat...my hubby does not detect...I do.... BUT very interested going bush, doing research before we go etc etc. Does your wife also detect? What detector/detectors do you have? Cheers, MERRY XMAS Kath |

Hi Kath, My daughter is coming to Perth from Geraldton for Christmas, then we will go to Cervantes for a week or so fishing and then back to Geraldton. Probably the first week in January if you are around in January at Geraldton we would love to catch up with you. My wife loves detecting, I carry the Minelab 3500 and when there's a signal she digs....Just joking! The trip we took across WA, NT SA Qld NT and back to WA this year was the first time we have even attempted to metal detect. It was just a huge learning curve. Basically we wander through the bush together and dig up bullets and tins and stuff and just have a great time. Theres probably a slight misunderstanding about the database I am talking about developing, It would be a personal single user database where a prospector would put in the details they want to keep about their own finds and localities for their own future reference - it helps to put a bit of science around researching and planning future trips. Not a database which is general public information. Over time, metal detector technology and prospecting techniques improve but MEMORY fades about localities - It would be handy to have data about each trip and success or failure of the search to refer to at some future time. Thanks for your replies and have a wonderful Christmas Bill |

Hello Bill, It would seem you were not too receptive to my reply to your post? Please understand your earlier post was a little ambiguous, I was feeling out your intentions, which you have now made clear. Once again looking forward to your contributions to the forum. Regards peter |

Kath I haven't heard of Keith and Ann, but then I havent been to our place in Cervantes much over the last few years since I retired.. ironic isn't it, you retire and intent to spend much more time in a place like Cervantes and you end up doing all sorts of other things instead. I will contact you if its ok when we get to Geraldton early January. I am not sure how I do that, I assume its by sending an email to you. all the best Bill |

Peter Thanks for your reply. I am already amazed at the amount of information that is shared by people in this forum but I wouldnt expect anyone to provide information about their spots in some sort of online database - so I misunderstood your original reply - thats why I explained further what the database could be. What I was really interested in was what type of information people would like to keep about their prospecting efforts if they wanted to refer to it in future - that way I can develop something that is useful for people other than me. Peter Somehow I posted that reply without finishing it. What I wanted to say in finishing was that maybe this post is in the wrong forum. I am prepared to develop a standalone database which people can have and use on their own Computer because it is something I am going to do for myself anyway... All I need to know is what type of data other people would like to keep if they had a simple way to do it. I am not sure whether I have the bug yet though, I just love being in the bush. I think you have to find more than one small speciimen to get the bug. Regards Bill |

Morning Bill, Yes, I agree it would have greater benefit if you inserted your data base in maybe "Research" down near bottom of page. Less chance of it being buried. Have just retired myself and as much as I was a little apprehensive about the move am now surprised I had time to work. The Australian outback is certainly appealing, never a day goes by that you don't marvel at nature at work. Whether it be a rock formation, creature habits or seem to be able to reach out and clutch a star. Wonderful, the silence of the bush with only the bird and animal calls to break the silence. Apart from the inevitable detecting sure hope to master my digital camera and record lot of images over the coming years. All the best, hope to catch you down the track, just look out for a Nissan Coilcab with "Nightjar" across the windscreen and TrailStar caravan in tow. Merry Christmas Peter |
