Hi Alan,

Are you talking about the 27 mHz AM/SSB handheld unit or an in vehicle set?
I have a Pearce Simpson AM-810, 40 channel cb radio in the Troopy which is over 20 years old.
Don't use it much these days as UHF is the go for short range comms.
In its day it was one of the top of the range models with all the bells & whistles built into it.

Cheers,

Ted

Hi Duro,

There are many on Ebay. If your life didn't depend on it this 5w 100ch looks good. ;)

Hi Duro

I wouldnt get a VHF, get a good UHF, sat phone and an EPIRB - can't go wrong. ( Maybe have a look at the thread on mob comms at FAQ depending on where your going). As a last resort get a HF instead of a VHF.

Cheers

Phil

Hi members,
thanks for the feed back, i have the uhf and eperb the only reason i never bought a sat phone is that more than one person have told me their is a posibility of areas where you cant get a siginal similar to a gps, thats sort of put me of the sat phone. thats why i was curious about a vhf .

Hi Duro,
I'm guessing and think you might mean a HF rather than a VHF.
That being the case then you can still pick up a reasonable priced Codan or Barrett

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Codan-9323-HF-Radio-with-9350-Auto-tune-antenna_W0QQitemZ150343368820QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Electronics_Radio_Equipment?hash=item150343368820&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/BARRETT-250-HF-RADIO-CODAN-SELCALL-VKS737-4WD-MARINE_W0QQitemZ370196469622QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Electronics_Radio_Equipment?hash=item370196469622&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

Two examples just to give you an idea.
I have the Codan setup and used it for a few years out in the Western Desert around Warburton,
Always able to get in touch with someone no matter where we were.

The Health Service I worked for out there replaced them with Sat phones and we did find that there were some 'black spots' with no reception.

Hope this helps,
Dennis

Hi Alan,

I have been using HF radio equipment out in the bush for over 30 years now
starting with an old Traeger 10 channel set on the Outpost Radio Network (RFDS)
up to my present unit a Barrett 550 now using the VKS-737 Network.
Wouldn't go bush without one as a means of remote area communications.
With the mobile phone setup gradually covering the remote areas, I still find the
HF comms setup a good backup if you can't get any phone network connnections.
Besides that you can use it for phone calls with the appropriate RADTEL network
connection.
If you shop around you can get a good reliable secondhand 10 or 12 channel HF
set complete with aerial for under $1500.

Cheers,

Ted
