Hi all, Every morning on our recent trip to our camp a "Nightjar" returned to his/her roost at our camp and woke us with the high pitched screech (6 times) before retiring to a length of PVC pipe guttering on the roof of the shack. These birds are nocturnal and retire to anywhere dark to rest during the day until they venture out again at nightfall to feed on flying insects. Needless to say my fascination for these birds has been a study of mine for many years. I hope to be able to devise a way of photographing their habits in the years to come. Peter |

Hey Peter maybe now is a good time to tell us how you are nicknamed "NIGHTJAR"????? Sounds like there is a connection to the story to do with these birds????? Do you happen to have a pic of these birds' to show us so we can look out for them when bush please? We had each evening while around the campfire a bat swooping around us at each place we camped at, no doubt getting moths etc, Cheers, Kath |

Hi Kath, Will try and find the story surrounding the Nightjar nickname. In a nutshell I found Nightjars were perishing in 100mm PVC pipe being used as haulage road markers. Being a nocturnal bird they slid down into these vertical pipes during the day and could not then climb out. A letter to the then Premier (Richard Court) on the plight of these rarely seen birds resulted in legislation banning the use of PVC pipe as road markers. That how my nick came to be. (On the left of my signature is a young Nightjar just emerged from a nesting box at our camp.) You can view an adult photo here: http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/finder/display.cfm?id=61 Adding to this story another letter to Richard Court resulting in more legislation stating that all drill exploration holes must be plugged. As you move around the goldfields you will see the lengths of 12mm poly pipe protruding from the ground at drill sites. These identify where the holes have been plugged with concrete. Don't confess to be a devout greenie but like your Dick saving the goats I believe nothing should die a lingering death. We can all do our little bit to help. Regards Peter |
