Hi Everyone
On a recent trip out in the goldfields I thought that there seems to be alot of my electrical equipment failing, first of all I couldnt work out why my 2 110amp batterys where going flat, not useing an electrical fridge or anything that drags heaps of power, just the light in the van and the detector chargers,I had these two batterys hooked up together in line,so they should have lasted ages,1 was brand new and the other was 3yrs old,big mistake hooking them up together, the older battery had aparently had its day and was dragging the other battery down with it.
Once i disconnected the old battery everything was ok,secondly I tested my 12amp battery charger with my multimeter and found it was only putting out 11volts,I thought thats buggered as well,so to charge up my battery Ill use the generator,it has a 8amp 12v charger on it as well, thought I better test it and it was to my horror it was putting out 30v,bugger cant have that it will ruin my new battery,so I thought i would test my 240v side of the generator and it showed 300v,bloody hell what else can go wrong,
So after alot of cursing and swearing and blaming chinese electrical stuff,I asked a fellow prospecter
if he could check my generator just in case I stuffed up somehow,he checked it all with his multimeter everything was perfect.
Was my bloody multimeter that had given me all this grief,it was stuffed.
Its now in a thousand bits. :) :) :) :)

Morning Jon,
Don't you just hate that when you have a run of problems, takes the shine off your nugs. :-/
Did you get your inverter sorted out or has that been junked as well?
My mate has a sticker on his Tojo that gets a few giggles and stares from people passing by.

Cheers

Good luck & safe travels

Your first guess was correct about the 3yr old battery. That would if connected in parrallel to another newer one flatten it over time.
Sulfides develop at the bottom of the plates as they age and this would cause the battery internal resistance to decrease ie lower in ohms ...thus creating a greater load on the other battery. Tis better to have to new batteries when doing something like this.
