Gidday Peter
You can detect in state forests in Vic but not national parks, you do need a Vic miners right, close to Melb I would go to Blackwood off the ballarat rd,stick to the creeks there if they are dry.
I found some nice gold there and its not that far from Melb, used to take me 40mins from Werribee.
X marks the spot,,,,,Once in blackwood drive straight past the pub,Ist right looks like it reaches a deadend but to the left you will see a dirt track, follow that down the hill and you will come to a pull in enough space for one car,and you are right on the creek I detected,if its dry try a mono coil as I only used a DD,creek runs a long way,I pulled over 5oz out of it before I got sick.
Hope this helps :D :D :D
