A question for all you you budding engineers out there, We have got ourselves a down hole air pump, no moving parts, we will lower it into a bore 25 metres deep. The discharge pipe is 20mm. What air pressure would be required to push water to the surface? cheers Peter Edited by Nightjar, Tuesday 10-11-2009, 18:30.

Ok Peter, 1 meter head of water = 1.4 pounds per square inch (PSI). Since your discharge pipe is slightly smaller then one inch diameter (20mm) let's call it approx 1 sq. inch in cross section area. Therefore a head of 25 meters of water = 35 PSI So to raise the water 25 metes & get a decent flow I would recommend an air pressue of 40 PSI. The minimum air pressure you would need is any pressure above 35 PSI. Please note that this is not the exact pressure required but for the purpose of the exercise is a round ball park figure. Thanks Ted, We have managed to get hold of an airpump and going to drop it down the bore on our lease to top our water supply if we run short. Very simple operation delivering 20 litres each fill with two valves alternating between water and air. Small engine driven compressor that delivers 100psi will certainly do the job. Cheers Peter |

Hi Jon, I'll draw a little diagram when I get time to show the simple construction and operation. The professional ones use electrically operated solonoids to alternate between air and water and can operate unmanned but for what we need two hand operated valves will do the job. A six pack and a shady tree near the bore and we should be able to deliver approx 250 litres/hour. Cheers Peter |

Hi Peter, I think Jon was wondering how Kalgal became Nightjar not how the pump works!!!!!!!! Cheers Ted |
