Hello members, For many years I have pondered why Paddy's mates only got minimal visual/historical recognition in Kalgoorlie/Boulder for their part in one of the greatest gold finds in Australia? Quote: Paddy claims that, whilst on their way to Mt Youle and looking for a stray horse, Flanagan discovered a substantial piece of gold at Mt Charlotte. When they realised the potential of their find, Hannan decided to seek out Daniel Shea, a mate whom had left a little earlier to Mt Youle and was in the area. This is a claim that Shea's brother later refuted, following the death of Daniel in 1908. How many people would know or would have ever heard of Flanagan or Shea? Personally I think this is an injustice and feel it would be in Kalgoorlie/Boulder/Coolgardies's interest to promote this event. They have a bronze Paddy Hannan sculpture displayed in Hannan Street, where are Flanagan & Shea? Peter |

Hi Nightjar I guess it is a bit the same as why Hargraves claimed all the glory for Australias first gold discovery and Lister & Tom were left wondering what happened, It took years for them to get any recognition. History is a strange thing, and you get different results when looked at from different perspectives. I guess Paddy got lucky while the others got forgotten. cheers dave |
