Hi Gary

Welcome to detecting!

I'm not quite sure if I understand properly what you are asking but if you have your garmin set on longitude and latitude you have to change that to UTM. This is what gives you grid co-ordinates in northings and eastings. I'm sure some of the more experienced folks will give you a hand out with this but if you get really stuck you can give me a call some time and maybe I can direct you over the phone with it. (Phone 0882520102 or 0414709435

The manual tells how to enter grid co-ordinates as well.

Once you get the hang of it they are a great little machine for the price. But never rely solely on your gps.

Cheers and good luck with it.

Hi Gary,

Welcome to the forum & another Rockingham lad too.

As Lyn mentioned the co-ordinates you gave are UTM which are given as northings & eastings.
Some people prefer to navigate that way but I still prefer the Lat/Long readings.
I run a a Magellan & most GPS units have similar setups so if you go into your setup on your GPS & select
the UTM option this will solve your problem.

Here is a site that can help with setting up UTM co-ordinates on your GPS: Map Tools

I have attached a copy of the Garmin E-trex GPS user manual if you haven't got one.
If you go to page 34 of the user manual 'Position Format',
it shows you how to change the default format - lat/long to other formats listed.

A great little program that a lot of people use for map navigation is 'OziExplorer' & used in conjunction with
the Auslig RASTER 250K Australia map series is just what you need to help find those co-ordinates on a map.
You can purchase these from most mapping outlets such as the Perth Map shop & the Fremantle Chart & Map Shop

Perth Map Centre
Address 900 Hay Street

Email Enquiries : sales@perthmaps.com
Telephone Enquiries : 08-9322 5649

OziExplorer site: OziExplorer

Hi Gary,

There is no Prospecting or Detecting Club in Rockingham (that I know of) although there is a gem club, but I would
suggest you join the Mandurah branch of The Amalgamated Prospectors & Lease Holders Association of W.A. (APLA)
who provide assistance to the prospectors & liase between Mining Companies & The State Government on their behalf
with regard to prospecting issues.
They hold regular meetings & workshops & the membership will not cost you an arm or a leg!!!!!!

Their website is here: APLA

Make sure you have a 'Miner's Right' for W.A. as well.

Also if you peruse this forum you will find a wealth of information that will help in the search for gold.
Above all do your research as this is 90% of the challenge. The other 10% involves going out & looking for it.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Ted

Hi Gary,

The '51j' possibly refers to a Military grid reference system (MGRS) that designates a grid reference on a map.
Here is an explanation:
"Military Grid Reference System (MGRS)
The Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) is an extension of the UTM system. UTM zone number and zone character
are used to identify an area 6 degrees in east-west extent and 8 degrees in north-south extent.
UTM zone number and designator are followed by 100 km square easting and northing identifiers.
The system uses a set of alphabetic characters for the 100 km grid squares.
Starting at the 180 degree meridian the characters A to Z (omitting I and O) are used for 18 degrees before starting over.
From the equator north the characters A to V (omitting I and O) are used for 100 km squares, repeating every 2,000 km.
Northing designators normally begin with 'A' at the equator for odd numbered UTM easting zones.
For even numbered easting zones the northing designators are offset by five characters, starting at the equator with 'F'.
South of the equator, the characters continue the pattern set north of the equator.
Complicating the system, ellipsoid junctions (spheroid junctions in the terminology of MGRS) require a shift of 10 characters in the northing 100 km grid square designators. Different geodetic datums using different reference ellipsoids use different starting row offset numbers to accomplish this."

Did you look at the 'Map Tools' website I posted above. It explains all on UTM co-ordinates

Also have a look:...... Here......on Northings & Eastings
