Morning John,
Would be interested in knowing what type of rock, can't ever recall seeing gold in this type of specie.
You deserve the find being out in 40° heat detecting.

Cheers
Peter

Good luck & safe travels
Peter

hi kath, peter,

not sure what type off rock it is, the geos are have a look at it [the other half wich is a bit bigger and has vissable gold showing on the out side,] i hit it with the pick and didnt put a mark on it, about 20grams in this peice the geo said at a guess, may see if the gem club can clean it up for me.

Happy New Year John,
Thanks for the info regarding the specie. Found a site referring to silica containing gold.
Don't fully understand the difference between silica & quartz however maybe one of our members can throw more light on the subject?

http://geology.geoscienceworld.org/cgi/content/abstract/21/6/539

The idea of making a clock face out of your specie would be very unique and much sort after one would think. Sure hope you can post a pic of the finished product if it all comes together.

Yes, we are going to have to get cracking soon and come up with a meeting place for the gang, the cooler weather will be upon us in no time.
It seems like yesterday that a discussion was taking place that we have to wait another 6 months before venturing out again (Unless you're like Bards, who has an inbuilt airconditioner and detects in 40°C :D ) and here we are only 3 months to go.

All the best and may 2010 be fruitful for all our prospectors.

Cheers
Peter

Good luck & safe travels
Peter

Hi Peter,

Here is a possible explanation that I got from a book I have on geology explaining 'Silica':

The term silica (also known as silicon dioxide) comes in two main forms - quartz & sand.
When it is applied to quartz it refers to all its forms i.e. as vein or reef quartz, quartz pebbles,
sandstone, quartzite, or as unconsolidated sand.
Quartz can come in many variety of forms; in crystal form - namely smoky quartz, rose quartz, amethyst, milky quartz ,
citrine, rock crystal or prasiolite to name a few.
According to microstructure they can be - chalcedony, agate, onyx, jasper, aventurine, tiger's eye, carnelian & rultilated quartz.

Cheers

Ted

Thanks for that Ted,
That probably explains why having found gold in sand (not creek beds) had me scratching my head.
John (Bards) if there is any decayed silica (sand) around where you found your specie it could be worthwhile running it through a dryblower maybe?

Cheers
Peter
