Merry Xmas Kath

That looks fabulous. All those tiny pieces are the bread and butter nowadays.

Can you tell me is the gold dollied and then melted to get it to this stage? We have quite a lot of tiny pieces that have quartz and stuff in them and I don't want Chris mucking around with that Hydroflouric stuff. People say that we just need to dolly the schrapnel but when we have tried doing that other times the quartz is still there and the gold is just flattened.

Maybe folks have some good ideas on this.

Just adding that we have some crucibles now and a mapp gas burner so hoping to do some experimenting and see if the quartz melts off like when we saw a gold pour in a mine a few years back. The quartz melted into this black glass stuff and most came off when it was quenched in water.

Grateful for any ideas.
Thanks
Lyn

G,day Lyn

This is what I have been told. Put some BORAX in the crucible and get that molten then add the gold and get that molten, the BORAX acts as a flux and the impurities get trapped in it. (Maybe you can add the gold and BORAX all at once and get the lot molten at once.)

Pour the molten mixture into a mould and the BORAX flux is the black glassy stuff that you see on the outside of the gold in the mould. Any bits of quartz should get picked up by the BORAX flux as well

The flux will brush off, and should leave the gold button resonably clean looking.

Thanks heaps Dave

Just the kind of kind of help I was looking for. Going to be fun having a go. We learn something every day.

Hope many of your footsteps in 2010 are in the path of gold nuggies!

Cheers

Hi Lynn/chris
We just put the gold in a crucible (pre warmed and dry)
then ad an equal amount by volume of borax,
cook it up and pour into a mould.

We have found the longer its in a molten stage the "silkier" the bar looks after cooling and
chipping off the left over borax slagg.

hope this helps out. ;)
All the best for the new year.

Good to see you back Kath and yes we have some good advice thanks.

Not going to be long before everyone will be back out in the fields again. We're looking forward to it but Chris still has a lot of work to do on our van. The hot weather slows everything to a standstill.

Cheers
