Hi All,

Just got back from detecting around a well known gold area in SA. I came across a faint signal at the base of a large tree. I tried swinging from a different direction but sound disappeared. I dug down two feet into very sandy soil but the signal stayed the same. Checked the tree trunk and around the signal spot but nothing. I walked away thinking it must be ground noise. Maybe I should of kept digging.
Please advise.

Regards GD

HI GOLD DIGGER,

GLAD YOU HAVE CHECKED THAT TREE STUMP ALREADY.....MANY TIMES A BIT OF WIRE, CAN OR SOMETHING IS STORED IN TREE TRUNKS AS YOU KNOW.

YOU SAY YOU TRIED SWINGING FROM DIFFERENT DIRECTION BUT HAVE YOU DETECTED ALL THE WAY AROUND THIS TRUNK?

REGARDLESS GOLD-DIGGER I PERSONALLY WOULD HAVE TO KEEP DIGGING & FIND OUT FOR CERTAIN THERE IS NO GOLD!!!!

WHILE TOURING AUST; WE MET A YOUNG COUPLE VERY EXCITED, THEY WERE FULL TIME PROSPECTORS.....ANYWAY THE LASS SAID SHE GOT THIS FAINT
SIGNAL AT BASE OF A TREE, DUG, GOT TIRED SO LEFT IT FOR HUBBY TO CHECK LATER. GETTING TEA READY SHE ASKED HUBBY TO CHECK..HE DID & CAME
IN LATER WITH A BIG SMILE, HOLDING A BEAUTIFUL SOLID GOLD 12OUNCE NUGGET!! WE SAW IT!! CHAP SAID HE WAS AMAZED AS THE SIGNAL DID NOT
INCREASE UNTIL HE WAS WAY????? DOWN IN THAT HOLE. HE DID WONDER IF IT WAS BECAUSE HE HAD TO CHOP THROUGH A THICK ROOT TO GET THE GOLD OUT.

HAPPY DIGGING & WE WISH YOU LUCK, :D :D

CHEERS,
KATH
Be kind to others & smile.

Hi Kath,

Thanks for that! A very interesting story. I've already cut through many roots, very hard work. gets harder to cut roots the further you go. After I dug down a couple of feet I checked in the hole with the coil. the signal disappeared. When I swung the coil over the hole at ground level it was still there. It's got me puzzled :'( . I checked everywhere around the area including the other side of the stump but no signal. Has anybody else on this forum had a similar experience? Please help.

Cheers GD

Hmmm Maybe I shouldn't, yeah why not.

I have had a couple of noises I couldn't find for the love of me, I kept getting deeper and the noise getting fainter as I was digging at the base of small bushes.

It wasn't until I had to break away a few branches to dig deeper that I located the signal :$

Yeah you guessed it, the first one revealed a very old piece of chain that an old prospector had used to teather his goat, but sure enough it had been well hidden but enough to cause a signal above the coil. LOL.

The second time this happened it turned out to be a wire hook that had been place on a branch with a small length of chain something that may have been used to support a camp oven.

But it sure had me going until I found out what it was LOL.

Cheers,
Trevor.

hi gd. I got a feeling you where up at one of the echunga diggings or mt crawford. Reason for me thinking those spots is i also have had the same thing happen at those areas many years ago. I reckon Trevor gets 1st prize here cause that was my findings also at jupitor ck and old echunga. There are many bits of wire that have been wrapped around lower branches and i even got into the same act myself when i could not carry any more junk. Best areas to try at those 2 diggings are german dam at old echunga and anywhere down hill from surface point at jupitor ck. Detect in a strait line from the old crystal mine down to hewletts hut. Whoops there i go again givin away good spots haha. But thats ok cause i reckon i know you from times past. Cheers. Pete.

Hi all,
Another source of targets, other than ones mentioned that we have found, are bullets lodged in the trunks of trees, most likely someone has hung a bottle, tin can or the like for a bit of target practice?

Cheers
Peter
Good luck & safe travels
