Hi Members,

I want to refill my bbq bottles from my trucks gas tank. Think of the savings and convenience. Any Ideas?

Cheers

Hi Dognug,

You are better off taking it to an authorised LPG gas retailer such as Kleenheat Gas. Much cheaper refills.
Besides those auto gas bottles are not designed to refill another gas bottle.

Well if you could do it, it would cost about $10 to fill a 9kg bottle with LPG at the servo price, and it costs about $30 at the camping shops etc. :$

Like Ted says auto gas bottles are not really designed to do it, but I suppose you could rig up a decanting device somewhere along the delivery line. After all that is what is happening as the gas is being supplied to the regulator that feeds the engine. ;)

Just remember gas is dangerous if not handled properly

Hi guys
someone once told me that there was an additive in the camping gas which made it smell, so if you had a leak you would smell it! Safety first!! Thats why you couldn't use the car gas for camping bottles.
That said he had a 9 kg bottle half full and he had made up a connection to join two bottles together. Then turn the fuller bottle upside down and get it higher than the empty bottle and you have a gas flow!
Frankly I'd rather pay $20 - $30 and be safe.
cheers

Hello All,

Re Gas refills, don't quote me but I think auto LP gas is different in its make up (composition) to camping LPG gas and auto gas is not suitable for use in camping / caravan systems. A phone call to Kleeheat would confirm the compatibility.

I agree with Jonshares regarding his Safety statement esp the smell additive - don't mess with gas - those 2 guys in Broome last year were blown up doing the gas decant caper and wrong use - leave well alone - is the life of people around you worth saving a few $$$$ - you have to live with it for the rest of your time if it goes Pear Shaped and believe me its always there.

Thank you all for your advise. I agree that decanting gas can be potentially fatal without taking proper precautions. I have scoured the net and from what I can gather, it can be done very easily. Some gas is better than others, what you want is propane but many servo's have butane mixed in which makes the gas a little less potent. I have found BP gas lasts longer with more kick so I assume they leave their gas unadulterated. Many country stations have pure propane because one truck delivers and fills both tanks.

Everything in my truck runs on gas. The fridge , cooker and genny. I could easily go through 4 bottles a week. That would cost me approx $40 to do myself or $160 and a trip to town. Thats a massive $120 per week saving. Worth singeing a few hairs for, don't you think?

I'm not condoning the practice and if your in any way mentally challenged, accident prone or senile, definitely go and get the $40 dollar fill.

Anyhow, I've found some interesting threads to read.

Hi Dognug
Yes there has been a lot of discussion Auto gas and camping gas over the years, but it all comes down to one thing and thats its all LPG.
I had a fitting made up to fill 9kg gas bottles from the servo, auto gas, been useing it for 10yrs,$15 a 9kg bottle,in my previous house we were on bottle gas and also filled them up for $45.
Not legal and dont get caught, but its just a bloody big rip off. ;) ;)
