Hi Kath I don't know what you had in mind by nite detecting. With the weather cooling down I can,t see the need but in summer time when the day time temp is high I have done it a few times. I normally turn of my engell and gen set if I,m using one to reduce EMI put a tiily lamp up in a tree (this light can be seen for miles) If a camp fire has been lit let it die down and ensure its safe. I would allow about an hour after the suns down before detecting to allow the ground to cool down this seems to help with ground noise and I would say the ground can be a lot quiter at nite. If you got one of those LED head lamps use it to see where your going, the light from these could be better but if you take a small torch with you as back up if it fails. I never wander far from the car or camp and I would not recommend straying far as if something happens it could be a long way back and always within sight of the tilly lamp. I always detect in fairly open ground thats not to bushy as you don,t know whats lerking under the bushs. I have heard if you drag a chain this can ward of snakes but have not done this myself. REMEMBER SPIDERS SPIN WEBS BETEEN BUSHS AND TREES AS WELL. I have heard that there is a wild dog problem in the bush and even though I have not seen any or any foot prints while detecting this could be an issue. I am unsure of the chance of you encountering a pack of dogs while wandering around or how could protect your self if you face this situation I have wondered about this senerio myself as the only weapon how have is your pick, but if you are dragging a chain this might be of use. Note I would tread careflly and slowly walk away and only use the chain or pick as a last resort. I am sure other members can give more informed info on dealing with dogs and might have personal experences that might help. Remember there are other nasties wandering around as well, spiders centerpedes and our favourite the humble mossie. I hope this helps Captain 101 |

Thanks ted, Peter & Carol are on their way, looking forward to meeting them. Captain that is very interesting what you wrote, enjoyed it very much so thanks for that. I have no serious intention of night detecting mainly because of lurking wild dogs as we have both seen & heard them..not the dingos, but not keen on them either! Another of our sons' kindly gave me a LED head lamp the other day, thought it may be useful even around the camp & that started me wondering about night detecting. You have given some very good advice for the night detecting & I am sure it will be appreciated by anyone wishing to do this. That is good, sensible info!! Thanks Captain. Cheers, Kath |
