Hi Folks

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Spot Messenger unit and how they would compare with an EPIRB.

I have been reading some old threads on Explore Oz forum.
Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks
Lyn

Hi Lyn

I have not come across the Spot Messenger unit or know anything about it, however if it works on the EPIRB system and sounds like it may meet your needs - make sure it operates on Freq 406 mhZ digital as the old 121.5 epirb system has been shut down officially - though they do use it in the last few km to find you.

I am aware of a device (no name) that uses satellites to transmit one of three pre-programmed messages to designated Ph number/s, Should you use option 3 it transmitts your gps co-ords and a message that you are in a bad way and need help ASAP. Should you need further info I will find out details from the guy who spoke to me about it last week.

While I am on the subject of EPIRBs and not knowing if this has been posted somewhere else on the Forum Please make sure you have one that works on 406 digital freq and is registered with AMSAR - you can do it online - once confirmed a letter with a sticker will be sent to you which must be affixed to the device.

Hope this helps.

Cheers PeterD
