can anybody help me out with WA weather patterns? as a eastern lubber, i seem to have picked up the infor that :- 1. the southern half of WA gets most of its rain during the winter. is this right? so when does it tend to ease off? 2. the northern half is mostely influenced by cyclonic weather? seem to remember there werent many this last summer? if so, should mean the spinefex should be less on the ground this spring? ... kev |

Morning Kev, You are right about the rain pattern as a rule in WA. Here is a site we reguarly use to project weather a week ahead. Just type in the town or post code you want info about. http://www.weatherzone.com.au/wa/pilbara/nullagine Unfortunately the spinnifex will still be there regardless. Cheers Peter |

Hi Kev, The northern winter, or 'dry' season (April-September), temperatures range from 24 degrees Celsius overnight to around 34 degrees Celsius during the day. Coastal temperatures vary little throughout the day, while the interior may exceed 40 degrees by day and dramatically drop towards zero at night. Summer in the north is the'wet' season (October-March), has temperatures in the mid to high 30s and high humidity. Tropical rainstorms are frequent during this period & cyclones can occur. It's not unusual for some northern coastal areas to record more than 1.5 metres of rain during this season. South of the Tropic of Capricorn the weather is less dramatic. The southern coastal areas of the South West region average a maximum of around 32 degrees in summer and 14 degrees in the winter with frequent rainy periods occurring. For several years now we have been experiencing long periods of drought in the mid west region where temperatures have been in the high 30's where our summer periods have extended out to April - May before they begin to cool. Hope this gives you an idea of the weather here in W.A. Cheers Ted |

Hi all, Hope to be going to Meekathara in about 2 - 3 weeks time. We haven't been there before and I saw you remark about the spinifex, is this going to be a problem for us. In general what's is the situation like for fuel, food gas and water . Cheers Laurie & Roz |

Hello Kev, Roz & Laurie, You won't have to worry about spinnifex until you are North of Meekatharra, having said that there are isolated small areas of spinnifex further South, one that pops up in the memory bank is about 100kms north of Leonora on either side of the Goldfields Hwy. Meekatharra is like an oasis in the desert, this time of the year the boganvillia (spelling?) should be in flower down the main street, has all you need when passing through, food, water, fuel and a cold beer in the Top (North) pub. There is only standing room in here during the Goldfields Racing Carnival. Used to be three pubs but one burnt down. When you get to Nullagine/ Marble Bar you will know you are in spinnifex country, there must be lots of gold hidden under the bushes. Back in the 80's around Nullagine, if you saw smoke in the distance you knew a prospector was onto a patch and burning off the spinnifex. May stand corrected but this practice is now illegal??? Good luck Peter |

Hi Laurie & Roz, Meekatharra has good shopping facilities for food & other supplies. Fuel & gas supplies are not a problem with the Shell Roadhouse being a major truck stop. It is also a Coles discount service station too so keep those in date coles sales vouchers to use for fuel discount. You can get water at the caravan park if you stay there & you should realise all the northern country towns water supply is water which is certainly of drinkable quality. Spinifex shouldn't be a problem in the Meekatharra region although there could be some areas where it does grow thick in places. Cheers Ted |

Thank's Peter and Ted for your reply regarding Meeka as we haven't been in this general area before. You made a comment that water is available in the Caravan Park in town, however we will be bush camping somewhere in the great outdoors, is there a desalinated water supply tap in town for filling up water containers as there is Leonora or a public tap. Also in Nannine a town with facilities ora location like Duketon. Cheers Laurie & Roz |

Laurie & Roz, Nannine is a ghost town, all that remains is a few crumbling bricks at the old PO site. On the left hand side of the road at Nannine on the Cue/ Meeka road there used to be a windmill, this water was sweeter than springwater. |
