Westonia is less than 20 minutes from here, a hour to southern cross or just under and just on a hour ish to mount palmer (fisher mine). wondering is their are only good for underground mining and of no use to prospecting? as its so close i thought it maybe a good spot to try and learn the craft but if its got no surface gold then i wasting time and motivation their? mount palmer has me interested, is a old gold mine that ran for a few years just before the ww2 and finished during ww2, so fairly recent by wa standards, wondering if scanning around the old battery would turn up much |

thanks, yes have read a few more similar to it and some reports from mining companies as well, wondering though how much is on the surface, seems right back to paddy hannan days its been below ground only. will take a drive on weekend to westonia and even though i dont have a detector yet will go scout a old closed mining shaft just west of the town. |

Gidday Jack By the sound of your location to different areas around the wheatbelt id say at a guess your in Merredin? Not being nosey or anything but i spent 20yrs there. I owned a roadhouse there for 15yrs which is now closed up,then opened Merredin carpet court. I dont know how long you have been there or if im right but perhaps we have met.

yep moved to merredin june 2009 from calingiri (near new norcia/ wongan hills). i need to learn how to use a detector, am keen to try areas around merredin to see what i can find, maybe find some ww2 material from both the airforce and army units that where around this town. i watched gold town on foxtel, which had a brief bit on the gold hunting and chatting at the pub in kal a few times when work sends me their to locals about it, all has me keen to try the hobby of gold hunting and then twice a year sometimes more we visit mother in law who lives on kwinana beach i will take detector down and look for something other than needles and drug gear. |

Hi Jack I wasnt into prospecting whilst liveing in Merredin,if you know where Eric Hutchins wrecking yard is,well behind there half way betweem him and the rock you will find some old concrete pads, thats all thats left of the old army barracks there, might be a good place to have a look for relics, the airforce hangers are on the nukarnie rd,dont know if they are getting used or not now. Also at Burracopin the old town dam site theres an old stonehouse relic that the caretaker lived in,they are always good places to hunt around as well.

burracopin i did not about, will check it out. yep raaf hangars one has someone in it, other looks empty but you would need to kind of break in to go their, but on the legal side the runway and former airstrip surrounds are in public open space and i would stand more chance to find stuff there. yes first place i went too on my first day in merredin was behind that wrecking yard, had a look around the peak and all the concrete pads have a info board in front of them now explaining what it used to be, will get a detector in next month or so and start searching around the army hospital. |
