Hi, my name is Dayle, and i live in Kalgoorlie. I've lived here for some time but have always wanted to get into detecting, being that im a bit of a tip rat and walk with one eye on the ground.
I guess i've dived right in to it and bought the best i could afford to.
A fortnight ago i purchased a second hand GPX4500
i then got a 18x12 mono, bunnings pick, neodymium magnet, and basic garmin etrex gps.
After talking to many people i found original volumes 1 and 2 of Gold and Ghost which are very interesting as you all no doubt know.
At the moment im concentrating on learning to use the GPX properly as i get a lot of noise.
I also learned to use TenGraph online.

So far ive been out Kanowna, Parkeston, and between Kal and KNS.
Finding gold isnt top of my list as im learning pinpointing and different sounds made by different metal ovbjects.

Welcome to the forum Dayle.
New members are welcome here whether they are experienced or not, you will be treated as an equal and if we can help you get into this great hobby we will.
You have broken the ice and posted that is the first step.
Now if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask, someone here will answer.
You are starting out with a superior machine the GPX-4500 and it will be only a matter of time before you walk onto your first nugget if you do your research.
Read all the posts about the 4500 and study the manual closely, practice as you have mentioned.
Good luck, we hope to read soon that you have found your first gold.

Cheers
Peter
Good luck & safe travels

Hi Dayle,

Welcome to the forum.
There are a few members here that live in & around the Koogardie area that you may
meet up with in the future.
A big advantage in the prospecting/detecting game is to join APLA as they have many field
days & workshops during the year which will help you learn the ropes in detecting.

Cheers

Ted

well, no luck this time, but i had a ball.
Met a prospector who tuned my 4500 for me, i didnt realise how quiet they can be, he even lent me his external speaker for the day.
Unfortunately i think my 4500 may need to go in for repairs, the plug the coil lead goes into may be loose as im getting a lot of warble at either end of the swing.

Hi Dayle,
Yes, you must make sure this plug is finger tight, then give it a wriggle while pushing the plug in and you can usually tighten it a little more.
However, what you explain "warble at either end of the swing" sounds more like your machine is not correctly ground balanced and you are lifting your coil away from the ground at end of swing.
A handy way to practice is to place a matchbox on the floor at home at either end of your swing, now concentrate swinging so you just skim the match boxes at each extremity. Even get someone to crouch down and observe your swing.
Low, slow and even swing is paramount.
Pge 22 of the GPX-4500 manual shows this.
