Hi Members,

This is an update from my first speaker I made which is on an earlier post.
A very cheap method on making your own detector speaker setup to use in conjunction
with an audio booster, or with the booster setup on the GPX4500 battery or
the booster on the Lucky Lark detector battery.
This will cost you less then $8.00.

Items

1.Dual speakers for IPOD units available from Reject Shop........$3.00

2.3.5mm Mono Chassis audio socket available JayCar...............$1.50

3.3.5mm Mono audio phone plug available Jaycar....................$0.85

4.3.5mm socket to 6.5mm mono plug available JayCar.............$1.95

Total....$7.30

Note: (1) The speakers come with a 3.5mm stereo plug fitted so that is why the
mono 3.5mm socket to 6.5mm plug is used to fit the battery audio boosters
and mono to activate the GPX4500 battery booster.(A stereo plug will not
activate the booster)

(2) I used a plug/socket to connect both speakers as the purchase setup has
both speakers permanently wired together which does make it awkward when
putting on your detector harness.
I simply disconnected to wiring to one speaker & fitted the 3.5mm plug.
To the other speaker I fitted the 3.5mm mono socket & wired it to that speaker
terminals with the output lead connected to those terminals also.

(3) For clips I used the belt clips off a couple of old tape measures &
screwed & areldited them to the back of the speaker case.

(4) Ensure when reconnecting the plugs, socket & speakers you maintain the
same polarity as they were originally connected.

Cheers,

Ted

G'day Ted

Not sure that the 3.5mm socket to mono plug is correct. The only reason to use a mono plug is to bypass the internal Minelab battery booster.

The external speakers that you can buy with the 4500 or 5000 has a stereo jack so as to activate the Minelab battery booster.

It is only if you use a external booster as well as the speakers that you need a mono jack on the booster only where it enters the battery.

Speaker that you can buy for the 4500 or 5000

Hi Dave,

In that case all you need to do is use a stereo 3.5mm socket to 6.5mm stereo plug
instead of the mono & wire the speakers so that they are only connected to the
first 2 contacts on the 3.5mm stereo plug as per the diagram on page 13
of the 4500 manual.
They are the same price at Jaycar.
BTW I carry both in my kit.
Cheers,

Ted

Yes Ted I think it will work better if you use a stereo 3.5mm socket to 6.5mm stereo plug.

Not sure how it will work with the mono plug ? did you try it like this, and if you did how was it.

I use the speakers like in my other post above and have them wired in parallel at the right angle 6.5mm stero plug jack. Just cut the plug off one of the speakers and solder the same wires together in the jack.

This way if the external booster is not working I then just plug the speakers straight into the ML battery and the speakers are then running from the booster there.

cheers dave

ps, I like the price of your setup though, how good are the IPoD speakers for sound quality ?

Ted why not just fit a 6.5mm right angle jack to the speaker lead and there are less plug to socket conections going into the battery.

Hi Dave,

It was just a matter of convenience in the wiring utilising the existing plug as I already
had a 3.5mm to 6.5mm plug in my kit.
I have tested this on all my boosters [Lucky Lark,Little Ripper] including the 4500 battery
after rewiring the speaker connections to suit the 4500 battery.
The sound quality is good.
Cheers,

Ted
