Thank you nuggetykath, well we were lucky, we caught a little break in the weather, it stayed dry, but we cut our trip a day short when it looked like bad weather, being newbies to both prospecting and the bush we didnt take any chances.

I wish to do another trip in the near future, I have my own business so getting away for a few days at a time is not too bad, but I think I need to find a 'friend' as my brother will not be quite as keen as I. As yet I haven't purchased a detector, I hired a gpx 5000, but my lack of experience of prospecting and the machine were my weakness, trying to find a course for the 5000 is difficult, I like to understand the machines a little before I buy, especially at the cost!!! :-/

HI twister

sorry to hear about the rain etc spoiling ur 1st trip out nth, bill and udo are a great pair,
and count your blessings meeting them, as they are great guys and know the murchison
very well.

As to not fully understanding the machines you used (gpx5000), Jonathan porter has just released his
"Unwraping the gpx5000" dvd, and after watching it i can honestly tell you that this dvd is worth
every cent it costs, not only for the new guys using the 5000, but also for the so called "i know everything"
operators of the 5000, who may think "i know it all and you cant tell me new stuff"...

Take note of the "salt gold timings using a mono coil" part of the dvd, it not only applies to the salt
lakes but also the many areas here in WA that we get that anoying weee-waaaa left to right inbalance
of the machine, caused by the salt inductance of the ground, whether its on actual salt lakes or close
to them, and also the gold laden "soak" areas here in WA.

J.P explains very simply how to tune, and even posts settings on the dvd to run the 5000 to its peak
ability when using Mono coils in any area, whether its highly mineralised or salt laden ground, there is also
a good section on running the 5000 in banded ironstone (bif) formations.... 80 odd gram nugget sunbaker..

We have all been very strung out this season by the constant rains, only to wait 4 days and BOOM! it bloody
rains again... keeping us all champing at the bit for a chance to get out on the gold, and the photo's posted
on this forum just of late of the torrent of rain flooding out the Cue van pk have gutted many a gold hungry
prospector, personally i'm looking at late october to get out to my areas in the murchison field.

^o) looks upward to the gods of gold for dry times.. :D :D

All the best on your quest for gold.

G'day Twister, why not just keep on hiring for the rest of the year....see how many trips away you really do and then decide. It's not really a question of which detector to buy, it's how much money you want to throw at your new hobby. In short, buy the best you can afford. Your in business.....you 'll tie up 6k working capital but the real cost is only the difference between what you buy the gear for and what you can sell it for in a hurry. If you look at it in that light then the 5000 is prob the way to go as it will be easier to re sell, although a 4500 has already devalued before you've bought it and the difference between the two figures will be less. Alternatively you could just say...stuff it..lifes short...it's only money....get out the credit card and have fun.
