G'day from a very new to (hopefully) detecting type of bloke and his missus. We have finally shed all work related commitments and being long time bush travellers have decided that in future this could well be combined with detecting. Have just completed a recce. tour of NT, top of WA then down through the goldfields where we enjoyed looking around the old "ghost" gold towns (Peak Hill for example) so will now plan for a more comprehensive trip over from the East next year properly equiped with a decent detector. So if anyone could make suggestions as to make, model (used) and any other equipment necessary for this activity would be very pleased to receive same. Very self sufficient in the bush, we have a L/C trayback towing a Supreme Getaway van which has proved its capability. Thanks. Mike |

WELCOME Mike & your 'Missus' Sounds like you have plenty of experience with the travelling in the bush so you will know about taking plenty of water etc; fly nets & leg gaitors!!! Safety with fires etc etc. Do please remember to fill in your holes. Leave campsite tidy by taking your rubbish etc,......you are no doubt already doing these things. Do lots of research...Tengraph & Google Earth are a big help.....get your miners right; ....before travelling over I suggest you organize getting permission & section 20As'. I now have the GPX5000 but not had a chance to yet use it. You will find heaps of hints & different views about the detectors & coils & anything related to detecting, lots to read!! Feel free to ask, many helpful members here. All the very best & we look forward to hearing from you both in the future. Cheers, Kath |

best advice I could give is to find aanother hobby.the very worst thing that can happen to you out here is that you find a piece of gold. Get out now whilst there is still a chance.........................runnnnnnnnnnnn. |

Even worse than the very worse thing that can happen Mike is your bride finds a piece before you do........ Small particles from your first nugget are absorbed through the skin on your fingers and forever more circulate through your system, grouping up occasionally causing a fever that can only be cooled by finding more and more gold. More particles are absorbed and the fever becomes more frequent leading to an overwhelming desire to be "out there". This leads to "I need" a better vehicle, more camping gear, the latest assorted coils and machines, a selection of headphones and speakers, a range of power systems plus more communication/laptop/mapping/tracking bits and pieces mounted on your dash until your cab looks like the Flight Deck on Starship Seven. Everytime you turn the key and it all fires up it sounds like R2D2 and 3CPO having an animated conversation. As to what gear to select . Depending on your budget you could start with a 2100v2 combined with a 17x11 DD coil and the same in mono. A good set of `phones. I love my DetecorPro Black Widows. By the time you can get the best out of a 2100v2 you will be ready to move up to the top range ,more than likely having found enough to finance the new gear and keep the 2100 as back up. Welcome to the forum, plenty of experience here and people willing to share. Driller. |

Thanks people for your comments. I also realized I am a bit of a rude bugger too; my 'missus" has a name, its Chris! Doing some research it would seem that I should consider the Minelab gpx4500? We are both reasonably proficient with electronic devices and usually find that when difficulty arises the best reort is the Instruction Manual. However, I would appreciate comment on this machine, it does come across very well in threads on this forum. I think around $4000 could be budgetted for. Yes Driller, I think I know what you mean. As a young bloke growing up in Vic. I worked in the bush around Walhalla and the idea of hitting a "golden reef" with the corner of the dozer blade was always in my mind! I had to settle for flyspecs in a tin dish from the creek. Mike (& Chris) |

Welcome to the forum Mike & Chris (has a better ring than missus) A lot of info can be found under "Minelab related information." A combination of the GPX-4500 coupled to a ML 11" mono would definitely be a positive start to your new found hobby rather than beginning with the 5000. You would have a few $$'s left over to arm you yourself with the must have toys Driller mentions. All the best Peter |
