Great finds David,
Can never stop learning, haven't heard before the penny being a "roo penny."
When did the first kangaroo appear on the penny?

What detector are you using?

Cheers
Peter
Good luck & safe travels

Hi Peter,

The kangaroo first appeared on the back of the Australian Penny in 1937 during the reign of King George VI
& continued up until 1964 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
& on the back of the Half-Penny in 1939 up until 1964.
Both the Penny & Half-Penny ceased to be produced by the Melbourne & Perth mints in 1964 when the
phasing out of the old currency commenced prior to the introduction of decimal currency in 1966.
Also for info there were no Pennies issued in 1937 and 1954 which makes the 1937 Australian Penny
the rarest Australian Penny. It was never released into circulation.

Cheers,

Ted

Hi Dave

Nice coin finds mate, here is a little info on the 1937 penny.

Known as ‘Australia’s rarest penny’, the 1937 Pattern Penny is one of the nation’s most important coins. It was struck at the Royal Mint in London as part of the Great Recoinage – a complete revision of Australia’s currency originally planned for the first coinage issue of Edward VIII, who abdicated in 1936. Known by just ten examples, and valued in 1992 at $55,000, this high-profile rarity would now command a price of more than $250,000......

I always thought the 1930 penny was the most valuable. Oh well...what's a couple a years?

David. What camera did you use to take the close-up photos of your finds. They are crystal clear.
