G'day Ladies an Gents, very new to this but i'm keen as mustard. Went prospecting a couple years ago up near Mount Magnet and i've been keen on going back out bush ever since. I do plan on going maybe late October or early November, not too sure yet, looks like i have a zillion and one things to learn before i commit to a 2 week camp out in the bush. I'm allmost tempted to have a looksie down Boddington way, has anyone had any luck down there? |

Welcome to our forum Old-Rattler, Yes, there is a lot learn and you can find many answers here. Probably first and paramount is your personal safety when heading remote. You mention late October, early November when temperatures can be high, so a reliable vehicle, plenty of drinking water and some bush navigation/communication is essential. What detector are you planning to use? Boddington is a very rich gold region however alluvial gold would be extremely difficult to find with a detector. Just starting out you would be advised to tackle you first choice, Mt Magnet and surrounding areas in close reach, Paynesville springs to mind, the hills to the South of the old railway siding have many old dry blowing shows, not easy to find but a search on foot may help. Good luck and keep your queries coming in. |

cheers for your comments Nightjar, i'm gonna be like a sponge and try to absorb every little bit of information as i can, any hints and tips are allways welcome What is the best time of year to be heading up to Mount Magnet and surrounding areas? I'll be taking my Hilux 4wd out bush, its reliable and fairly tough, i have been told i should take an epirb with me just in case things go pear shaped, and i will be hiring an SD 4500 detector, i'm hoping for a 2 week trip all up

A big welcome to the forum old-rattler. Make sure you do your research & get those permissions like section 20A s before you head off. Guessing you know to fill your holes in, take rubbishwith etc.... Boddington....A friend who is a driller told us the gold deposits are very deep. He also said the same for around Manjimup. I would go where you mention as your chances, I would say, would be much better. This time next month the family & myself are hoping we will be out detecting! Can't wait!!!! Enjoy this passtime VERY much & hope you do also! Good luck, Cheers, Kath |

cheers NuggetyKath research and planning is the key i think, so much to read on the internet. i have figured if i head out for a 2 week trip and find nothing its all part of the learning curve, either way, with time off work and the beauty of the outback i'm sure i will enjoy myself and yes, fill in my holes and take all my rubbish, only leave behind my footprints ![]() And good luck and safe travels with your trip next month, hope to read all about it here ![]() cheers Jon |

Morning Jon, I see you are hiring a GPX-4500 so may not have a manual? You can print this PDF (Free) and become familiar with the workings which are paramount when starting out. http://www.minelab.com/__files/f/3965/4901-0063-1.1%20Instruction%20Manual%20GPX-4500_screen.pdf Good luck |
