Gundanium Circus Master Timeline and Plot Summary (v1.0) 2000-2100 AD: The nations of Earth enter into a prolonged period of economic recession brought about by overproduction of consumer goods and a decline of useful manufacturing of raw materials. The prolonged recession leads to a rise of Conservative idealologies across the globe, feeding the ambitions of a resurgant Iran. Iran, emboldened by its development of a secret nuclear weapon begins vocal opposition to efforts to seek alternative energy sources. After attacking Israel, Iran's actions trigger a series of four related but seperate wars that become collectively known as the Reconstruction Wars. These Wars involve every nation in the world, and in their wake the world is faced with a true economic depression. 2100-2150 AD: Devastated economically by the Reconstruction Wars - the United Nations accept a revisied version of the old Lunar Settlement Initiative proposed by American President Barrack Obama back at the beginning of the last century. His Initiative is refined into the Universal Century Project, which aims to expand Human frontiers to space via colonization of permanent space habitats as a means to provide both alternative power sources and an economic boon. To fuel the growing space industries, former superhuman soldiers turned blue-collar workers known as Coordinators are utilized to lead this colonization effort. Many perils are faced along the way - disease swept the globe, a Coordinator Civil War, and many religious elements voiced strong opposition to the programme. But this global focus on colonization the stars created an economic boom, and this success slowly won over public opinion. 2150 AD-UC 01: The Coordinator Civil War finally comes to an end after a massive United Nation's Peacekeeping Force all but eradicated the Regressive movement. The public is kept in the dark about the truth of why the Regressives dissapeared, their execution justified in the name of keeping progress on the Universal Century Project moving forward. However, by that point most of the work had already been done on the new colonies - and a growing number of Coordinators found themselves with free time in a society that accepted their existence but not their rights as citizens. Protests began, and fearing a second Coordinator revolt, the United Nations promised Coordinators (and other superhuman races) greater representation under the law. Thus were the Coordinators and other space immigrants (collectively called Spacenoids) permitted to form their own nation under the name of the Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty (ZAFT.) UC 01-Present Day: With the completion of the Laplace space colony in low orbit - the calendar was changed to the Universal Century standard and a new world government was formed - the Earth Federation, whose government was relocated to Laplace. ZAFT joined the Federation, but tensions between Earthanoids and Spacenoids did not subside. Specifically the two sides disagreed on the extent of the autonomy that ZAFT would possess, as well as the extent of ZAFT's territorial boundaries (technically ZAFT was mandated to have influence over the whole of Lagrange Point space, but the Federation only recognized its authority over the ZAFT capital in the PLANTs.) But these issues were superceeded in January of UC 0079 when a task force of new Zaku II Mobile Suits flying the Regressive flag launched an attack on the Federation garrison inside the PLANT. Taken by surprise, the Federation forces were nonetheless able to turn the tables on the Regressives... until the Zaku's deliberately changed their course and directed themselves at Aprilius One, the PLANT capital. One-by-one, over 60 Zaku's slammed into Aprilius One and overloaded their reactors, causing fatal structural damage to the colony. Though most had evacuated to lifeboats, the extensive and sudden damage colony ripped the colony to pieces and destroyed many of the lumbering lifeboats as they fled. Millions died - a bold declaration by the Regressives that they had returned. But that was not all. As Aprilius One died a message was delivered to the Federation Supreme Council by the Regressive leader, declaring their intent to attack PLANT once more. But they would not attack the ZAFT defense fleet - they aimed to slaughter the survivors of Aprilius One as a testament to the devotion they have for their cause. They further give the Federation Council a choice: if the Federation stands with ZAFT against the Regressive attack - the Regressives would begin a second revolution against the Federation as well. But if the Federation denounced ZAFT, it would be forgiven for its transgressions against the Regressives one hundred and fifty years prior. And so it was - even as ZAFT and Federation fleets head towards the PLANT to help recover the survivors of Aprilius One; the Regressive fleet has already launched and is moving past Side 6 as part of their Operation: METEOR. In one week's time they'll arrive at ZAFT's doorstep to finish what they started. ZAFT, obviously, is committed to defend its homeland - and the Federation faces a choice between standing with ZAFT and opening itself up to attack, or to leave ZAFT to stand on its own. Of course... after the massacre 150 years ago of the Regressives; can they even be taken at their word that if the Federation does nothing they'll leave the Earth alone? One week remains until the answer is known. The time is January 25th, UC 0079, and the Bloody Valentine Incident has begun. |
