This is the tutorial for the custom firmware hack for the PSP 100x,
This is the only one i have experience in, so this will be the easiest to understand, hopefully.

There are several ways to hack this but i will only cover the one for all firmwares

Ok to start to hack your PSP 100x you need two things:
A Pandora battery
and
A Magic Memory Stick

PANDORA battery:
To create a pandora battery, you will need a solder and another battery (Once you change your battery to a pandora, it cannot be used normally, This is why i bought mine from HERE http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12472)

Quote:

1) The first thing you'll need to do is open up the battery. You can do this with something sharp that can wedge around the outside, such as a guitar pick. Do not use something metal or it might short out the insides

2) Next, you need to locate a certain chip. The chip has the model number S93C56 printed on it, or IC04 printed next to the chip on the board. We are going to need to desolder pin 5 and lift it off of the board. You can find the chip in it's standard position below, and the pin you need to desolder is highlighted
http://albums.kimag.es/albums/scorpus57/49707165.jpg

3) If you are not confident in your soldering skills, have a less than steady hand or have a larger-than-optimal sized tip, please desolder the cell pack from the battery first. If you make contact between pins 5 and 6 then you will short ground to +3.6VDC! Not good! When desoldering the cell, only keep the iron on long enough to melt the solder. If you can, use a higher wattage iron so that the tip will be hotter, but you won't transfer as much heat to the cell pack. Remember that heat + Li-Ion battery = large explosion, so if this is your first solder job maybe you should try something easier first.

4) Now is actually desoldering the pin. There are a few ways you could do this, but I think my method is the best because its less likely to damage components near by. Use an Xacto knife with a sharp tip and try to put it underneath the pin. Get somebody to hold a soldering iron (WITH A VERY FINE CONICAL TIP!) on the pin. When the solder melts you can pop the pin up with the knife. Be sure not to hold the iron on the board too long to avoid the lithium battery from getting too hot and exploding.

5) Finally, you'll need to close up the battery case. You can use glue or tape to do this.

6) You now have a working Pandora's battery.

(I quoted this because i am really lazy and i dont actually know how to do this)

Magic Memory Stick:
Now you will have to make a Magic Memory Stick, This is just to install the custom firmware.
NOTE: You will need a PC just to run a single program for this.

1) Download Rain's Ultra Lite MMS Maker and the 5.00 Official Eboot -- HERE http://thepcreport.net/downloads/rains-ultra-light-mms-maker/

2) Extract both items

3) Connect your PSP to your computer and run RainUltraLiteMMS.exe

4) In the window, tick the 'Format Memory Stick' box, then click make MMS (Yep you guessed it, it formats everything, SO BACK UP)

5) You MAY be prompted to find the 5.00 official Eboot. It will be in the same directory as the program.

6) WAIT

7) Now you've made the MMS ^_^

Installing the firmware:
Okay this is basically watching loading bars,
Make yourself some tea in the meantime.

1) Insert your MMS into your PSP (You'll probably already have it in in this case TAKE OUT THE PANDORA BATTERY, For now that is)

2) Hold the L trigger while inserting the battery and start it up

3) A fancy menu should load, if not, try again without holding L, otherwise contact me.

4) Press the 'Install 5.00 M33' option

5) A loading bar will appear, have some fun in the meantime.

6) Once your PSP has shut down insert your normal battery or just plug it into the AC adaptor.

RECOMMENDED -- If you would like to update to the newest custom firmware (5.50 GEN-D3) then
-Download this: http://thepcreport.net/downloads/5-50-gen-d3/
-Extract
-Copy the UPDATE folder from the .rar to your psp under /PSP/GAME
-Copy 550.PBP to the root of your memory stick (The base folder that will come up when you plug in your psp to your computer)
-Then disconnect your PSP

On your psp go to Game, then Memory stick
Run the 5.50 updater
Blah blah blah
DONE

NOTE: Plug in your psp to the AC when doing this no matter what, if it runs out of battery during your psp will be bricked.
