I think they more or less just let you plug any audio /video source into your computer so you can record their output as a video file. I have never had one. I have my xbox plugged into a Panasonic Hdd/DVD burner that I can record video from my xbox, edit, and then burn to dvd or convert to mpeg4 and put on an sd card.

I have a friend that uses his TiVo as one. He records his Xbox gameplay, stores it on an external hard drive, and edits it on his computer. But yeah, basically what EPYON ZERO said! It's how RvB (well, pretty much all Machinimas) and gameplays/commentaries are made! :D

blech. if i go with the roxio, i'd have to either get a hella long cable to run to the desktop or move it whenever i wanted to capture.

off to look for mac compatible options!

I've been considering a Dazzle. They're cheap, and record in decent quality.

If I was super rich, I'd get this one: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?client=ubuntu&channel=cs&q=hauppauge+hd+pvr&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=11247393974687079463&sa=X&ei=vS90TozpEKLRiALPsfmzAg&ved=0CGcQ8wIwAw

I did research into this many moons ago, and there are a few options.

Actually buy a capture card, but beware that PC and Linux systems have more flexibility and more options than Mac's, but most cards do work on many OS's.
Roxio, Dazzle, Pinnacle and some others are good to start with.

Invest in a good Graphics Card (not necessarily the most expensive) that has multiple I/O connections (or a breakout box/daughter board with connections), and then get a piece of software (you may find very good free ones on the Net; have a look at Sourceforge, one of the most professional places to go for software and development). You may need to train your self, by doing epic amounts of reading, to configure and use the hardware/software combo, but you will gain greater control and, again, flexibility than buying a capture card.
You can also get TV cards that can do a similar/same job too.

Use a camcorder. I'm not joking. Some camcorders can record from a source, so you can record from the 360 output into a camcorder input. That said, you may want to invest into an A/V splitter (such as HDMI splitters) so you can connect one to a camcorder and one to a screen (instead of watching the action on a small screen.
Some DVD/Blu-ray recorders can do a similar job, and in fact, there are other small devices that can do this too.

For PC paid software, the best would be FRAPS, as it does screen capture, benchmarks, and video capture. It costs £24 at point-of-purchase, and for updates, costs nothing. That is, you purchase once, and every new update/version will be free thereafter.
For PC free software, you could use E.M. Free Game Capture 2.30, but there are others too.
For Mac software options. Erm....lets see....ah here is...no, no that won't work....er........try these:

HyperEngine AV (free, I think)
Snapz Pro X (pay)
Jing for Mac (free)

Hope this helps :)

totally resurrecting this because i am still a dunce.

i have this thing now. :yay:

i have NO idea how to set it up and i keep confusing the crap out of myself.

my 360 is hooked via HDMI up to the surround sound receiver which is then plugged into the tv via HDMI.

how exactly do i make this work? i'm so freaking confused. and feeling very stupid. who wants to hold my hand through this? :date:

:hooray: Yay technology!

From what I can see, you'll need to connect your 360 to the capture card, via component cables (the red, blue, and green ones - which look like they came included! Another yay!), then the audio from your 360 to the card using the other red cable, and the white one. All of this goes into the bottom section where it says "Game IN".

THEN, depending on if your TV accepts component-in (those red, blue, and green cables), you'll connect the capture card to your TV using a second set of component cables. As far as the audio goes, it also depends on if your surround sound receiver can take the white and red cables. If it does, just use a second set of those red and white cables to plug 'er in! Bingo presto, you can now capture random shenanigans! :D

Hope this helps! :)

really stupid question but if i connect it to the receiver, why does it need to go to the tv too?

Component cables only carry video, no sound. Hence, why you'll need to connect the red and white ones (which carry audio) to your receiver!

I have been looking for a capture card too, but since I use VGA between my Xbox and monitor and my budget is limited, I haven't been able to get any. Plus the thing that almost no finnish retailer sells capture cards.

Oh and these are the best capture cards available, as far as I know.

As far as I know, the 360 isn't capable of outputting both HDMI and component at the same time. It's just a one-or-the-other sort of deal :(

Yep I'm pretty sure you only get one or the other.

As for needing to hook up to the TV, you may find that the live preview on the computer of the game you're playing lags slightly (depends on how good the capture card is) so being able to play as normal with the TV is very useful.

Bumped, ohwell. My roommate (flatmate) and I are going to invest in some recording equipment soon. However he mainly plays on PC and I on Xbox. Obviously PC has an easier time recording and editing because everything is centralized. It's hard for me to join the PC realm with an outdated laptop and a Mac. But the argument over which platform to focus on is another issue.

We are focusing first on the basic tools for recording: a video editing software, recording hardware and a big harddrive. Hopefully David and I can get things organized and we can make some trial videos. I'll keep you guys posted!
