New York Times Article about Anwar al-Awlaki

There have been many preachers of terrorism against the United States, and there are even a handful of English speaking ones. What makes Anwar al-Awlaki so special was that he was an American citizen. He has been hunted for quite some time because the Obama Administration thought his grey area death is less dangerous than his continual preachings. His death had forgone due process, which every U.S. citizen is constitutionally entitled to. Thoughts?

Topics such as this are a bit of a grey area for me. While he was an American citizen, he seemed to have separated himself with any "American" identity he had. I'm not a law major, so I can't really conclude whether his death was "unconstitutional".

But it certainly makes for an interesting topic for debate!

An interesting topic for debate that no-one wants to debate ;)

I dunno. It just gives me a headache. On the one hand, it's too easy to fall into the "DEY DERK ER JERBS!" hillbilly mentality of "KILL THE TOWELHEADS" and stuff; assumptions that every Muslim wants to blow himself up and that every white person is perfect. Need I point out Timothy McVeigh etc. On the other hand, it's also too easy to be a peace-loving hippy who thinks that everyone is wonderful and nothing terrible ever happens to anyone.

I try not to think about it too much, to be honest. Might be crass of me to tune out of conversations like this and worry more about what's happening in my favourite TV shows, but hey. Not like I can magically solve any of the issues between the Middle East and the West.

i didn't even see this topic, sorry!

so like crazy said, he was an American, yes, but really in name only. the whole situation is so complex and i don't know that there IS a right answer, truthfully, yanno? i mean, on the one hand, our country had this guy assassinated. on the other....he's not the first and nor will he be the last. the fact that he was American born doesn't really change his actions and state of mind towards other Americans in this whole "world on terror" crap.

i don't know that i LIKE the fact that we had him just assassinated but i don't know that there's much else we could have done? yes, we're entitled to trial by a jury of peers but...this guy was a known terrorist. to me that's different than having someone like Casey Anthony or OJ assassinated, yanno?
