I don't think I'd want to trust my family's lives and my valuables to prisoners! http://www.aol.com/2011/10/10/inmates-fire-stations_n_1003223.html |

so my gut reaction was ?! no way! then i read it and started thinking and really....i kinda like the idea. i mean, i'm not THRILLED by any means but i like the concept. it looks like it's nonviolent criminals (drug charges and theft, etc) and it's not like they're being charged with upholding the law. they're being asked to carry around heavy ass water hoses and put out fires. since so many places have resorted to cutting public services and not having enough funding, i see it as a way for everyone to win. the criminals get to work for their food and the town still has adequate fire services. i'm definitely curious to see how it works out! |

Yeah, I can understand (at least, partly) the reasoning behind it, but I'm not sure it can work. Would firefighters want to entrust their lives into the hands of prisoners? Maybe there's a way to "use" them as labor without being involved in such an important societal function. I'd rather see them as trash guys than first responders, or something like that. |

As long as it would be inmates with non-violent charges, or theft, then I'm fine with the idea! It's not exactly the most exciting of ideas, but a creative one nonetheless. |

confession: i keep seeing "Inmate" and thinking "inanimate" or "intimate" and thus confuse myself.

And then people ask why we have these: TBH, we need MOAR!!!!! On topic, yeah, that's unnerving to know, but if the programme works, and not available to serious offenders, then it might be just ok. More so, there might still be hope for those who want to change, but I do understand that being too naive will undermine the overall effectiveness. One can still hope though! |
