God, as if we haven't discussed the last two!

So I thought the penultimate episode was AMAZING. Shane's death was so surprising, even though in a way it had been a long time coming. I guess I just didn't think he would actually go; if you were to write a list of the characters in order of decreasing importance I think everyone would've put Shane second behind Rick. The way it happened was amazing too, and the direction leading up to it with Shane's crazy off-camera murder of Randall and his subsequent tree-headbutting was so intense. Nice to then further tease the "we're all infected" thing. And the end scene with all the zombies in the background was SO creepy.

The finale, on the other hand, was a bit of a mixed bag for me. It totally delivered on the zombie apocalypse front, and the panicked escape was great, and I was well happy with the last scene where Rick is clearly losing it after Laurie was an utter cunt in her reaction to his confession. It just made Rick that much cooler. However I was a bit disappointed that they never even reached the prison, and the reveal about what the CDC guy had said was a bit of a moot point by the time it was revealed, and the Assassin's Creed character with the two zombies on chains felt a little TOO comic-book; like it had come out of a different show. I also think it was a bit lame that the episode fell into so many cliches, with only the obvious characters who we didn't really know the names of dying. Even having the apocalypse on the farm happen in the last episode was a little too predictable compared to the first season. Also, whether intentional or not, the opening scene made it feel as if the whole "zombie migration" thing is only happening because they're all blindly following a helicopter across America.

Overall it wasn't the best season. Some great moments, and some very significant plot development in terms of character deaths etc, but when you compare it to the first season it falls kinda flat. I'm a little concerned about season 3 given that it's going to be SIXTEEN episodes long.

Oh well. Walking Dead finishes and in its place I get Dexter, Once Upon A Time and Game Of Thrones...

DICKHEAD!! Ok, that was aimed as much at you for not putting a spoiler tag in as to myself for...well...I had thought the one with Shane dying was the last episode. I mean, there was no 'next time' bit, and it just felt like the end of the series, all cliffhanger like. Fortunately I realised this before getting far into your post and the finale is now on the download.

I shall return.

Ok, watched it all now :cheer:

So I pretty much totally agree with what you said about the penultimate episode. It was awesome and that's probably also why I thought it was the finale. The finale itself, I too was torn. I mean the whole zombie attack thing was all well and good in terms of action, but felt like it was there purely to trim the fat and bring about a new group (though why the fuck T-dog is still alive I have no idea; maybe they're trying to turn the whole token black guy cliche on its head by not killing him...). And that's the second helicopter we've seen for no particular reason. It also surprised me that despite all their planning and what not, it never occurred to them to have an escape plan in place for such a situation. Particularly as they made no special effort to fortify the farm. Just before the prison scene, when they were shouting about having no place to go, I thought 'if you were British there'd be castles!'. Some comparisons could be drawn if one were to then think Britain = castles, America = prisons...but I don't think such controversial cultural judgments are part of the show...

Gotta say though, I was well chuffed at the sword babe. The amount of times I've thought 'sword would be better than gun'... Quite why she's got got a couple of armless walkers chained to her though :wtf: Still, hurray for Sword Babe!

So that's it until autumn. Boo. But as you said, there are other shows. Never got into Dexter - liked the first series, couldn't be arsed with the second. Is Once Upon a Time good? I thought oooohhhh! when I saw a trailer, then noticed it was on channel 5... But as for Game of Thrones :cheer: :pillowfight: :yeah: :yeah: I am SO FUCKING EXCITED ABOUT IT!!!!! I love the books, I was blown away by series one; it was exactly what I hoped for and more, and series two is only TWO DAYS AWAY :dino: In fact, I'm gonna go and watch Drogon and co crawl over naked, sooty Danaerys. Yum.

Ha, nice review :D If you want to know who is playing sword babe...
Spoiler: click to toggle

To briefly cover the other TV shows mentioned:

Dexter S2 is terrible, S3 is good, S4 is one of the best seasons of any TV show ever. S5 is also pretty great.

Once Upon A Time - no idea, it starts tonight on UK TV. But it's by two of the LOST writers and apparently it's very LOST-like, so...

Game Of Thrones - yeah, I fucking love that show. I've not read the books and I don't want to, purely for spoiler reasons - I want to be shocked when they do things like KILL THE MAIN CHARACTER. Also Sky are awesome because they're airing it the day after it airs in the States, woo :D

Yes. Yes I do. Books may certainly capture things like emotions and thoughts better, but a well-directed fight scene is always going to piss on reading "and then I hit him with my sword. And he hit me with my sword. And then I kicked him. Lol". I am also always going to prefer looking at actual tits than written-down ones. :bag:

Even The Walking Dead is based on a thing that isn't a TV show ;)

EDIT: An important clarification - 99% of the time, films or TV shows are never as good as the books they're based on, thanks to shitty writing, acting, and/or directing. LOTR is one of the few exceptions, and from what I hear from people Game Of Thrones is remarkably close to the source material.

And nice link ;)
