I'm a film school graduate, but long before I started watching movies with a class I loved watching films at the 'ol Theatre (that's for you, Scruff). Use this board to post any recent film viewings, at home or at the cinema, and give us your thoughts (not synopsis), like it or love it.

to get the ball rolling, I watched Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins on Netflix. Really brutal samurai movie, but beautifully shot and wonderfully acted. It has all the grandeur of a Kurosawa film in the majesty of color, with modern perspectives on brutality and violence.

Nice try; it's still called a cinema here ;) Theatre's are for plays and stuff, though I appreciate the correct spelling ;)

So I'm usually a bit behind on films, I rarely go to the cinema (I don't like people, or paying £8 to watch a fucking film), so I tend to watch things as they come on Sky (who provide me with my TV) and their wonderful movie channels.

Over the weekend I watched:

Jackass 3 - got a bit bummed out thinking about the full implications of Ryan Dunn's death but it was a great Jackass film; very funny, very painful, and very disgusting. As usual, Knoxville and Dunn provided me with my favourite parts, though I did appreciate it every time something bad happened to Bam. I hate that guy.

and Winter's Bone - what I thought was a quiet little indie film but turns out to be this Oscar-nominated masterpiece. It's still a quiet little indie film though; a drama about a teenage girl living in a remote part of Missouri trying to find her bail-jumping dad. Surprisingly menacing, and it's incredible to think that places like where it's set still actually exist, and John Hawkes gives an incredible performance as Teardrop. I didn't really know John Hawkes much before; I'd heard that he'd been underused in LOST and fuck me, he was underused in LOST. That man can really act.

i'm not too big on movies, really. lately D and i have been renting TV shows from the library and blowing through those. currently it's Criminal Minds, Numbers, and Big Bang Theory.

incidentally, the girl that played in Winter's Bone is going to be Katniss in The Hunger Games. :yay:

I go through phases of movie watching, seen quite a few recently.

Newest Pirates of the Caribbean - was ok, not as good as the others
Attack the Block - really good fun, enjoyed it a lot
Eden Lake - grim; really, really grim
Sucker Punch - great fun (for blokes)
Source Code - dull and predictable
Limitless - pretty good
Hobo with a Shotgun - hilarious if you like that kind of thing
Thor - alright, nothing special but not that bad

SHAME on you Scruff; seeing a movie at the cinema is the best way to see a film; nothing beats the picture and sound. Once I start making movies, you best see them in theatres. Or I will find you.

I really want to watch Winter's Bone! I usually have to steel myself before watching movies like those; I usually feel whatever the movie's trying to communicate long after it's done.

Hey Braythor! I REALLY want to see Attack the Block; heard great things, and I love (most) of Edgar Wright's films (exception being coughcoughScottPilgrimcough).

And yes, Hobo With a Shotgun is a pretty awesome film. I love B movies, and hookers with hearts of gold.

Girl, you need to get big on movies. So many good ones out there; not so much the Hollywood ones now but there are other options.

Perhaps tell me what you're into and I can offer some suggestions?

What's this netflix malarky? Is it a streaming thing? Is it good quality? I just download movies (I have objections to paying for films before knowing whether they're worth my time, and I HATE going to the cinema), I just wish that a) my computer could handle HD files or b) that tversity worked as well with the 360 as it does with a PS3 - for example, all my Game of Thrones files are HD but I can only watch them in 720 on my 360 if I pause it for ages. But if I go to my mate's house it works in full 1080 HD instantly through his PS3...

I do go to the cinema; just rarely is all. On the plus side, you get a nice big screen and decent surround sound. On the downside, you get surrounded by idiots talking, eating and playing on their phones, inferior picture quality and you can't pause it when you want a piss.
I generally go for 'big' films that I want to see. Next cinema trips will be the last Batman and then The Hobbit :)

Don't need to steel yourself for Winter's Bone; it's not a full-on assault on the senses kind of movie, it does ease you in slowly to the unpleasantness. It's worth it just for John Hawkes :)

For awhile I was a money saving nut who only saw movies when they were released on DVD. And then I would borrow them from friends. But seeing Avatar in IMAX 3D and Inception in IMAX, it is totally worth it! The experience is unreal.

So any good movie is definitely worth watching in theaters (correct spelling). I agree Scruff, the next Batman and Hobbit are a definite must. My last outing was Harry Potter 7 Part 2.

yeah, when we're in the states we usually go see the big movies in theaters (thank you for that btw....a "theatre" is an area of operation. not so pleasant to watch movies in...) but wait and netflix the rest unless it's something i REALLYREALLY wanted and then we buy it.

Jesus, how did this thread get all the way back here? Don't you people watch films? ;)

So I just got done watching the French horror/drama, Martyrs. It's excellent. It's also very, VERY hard going. It's a very story-driven film that starts off as one thing and ends up as a totally different thing, with a bunch of twists along the way that don't feel forced (unlike, say, the stupid ending of Switchblade Romance). However, the last half hour is some of the most unrelentingly brutal stuff I've ever seen in a film, and I'm pretty used to extreme films (o hai Irreversible). And the ending is... well. Odd. I didn't like it initially but it's quickly grown on me and now I love it.

Anyway, the weirdest thing about all this? Bearing in mind that it's super, super extreme, and is the only horror film to ever get a 18+ certificate in France... There's an American remake coming. From the producers of Twilight.

I just read a synopsis on it and it looks both intriguing yet disturbing

I might buy the one that has already been released and just use subtitles. I have a bias against anything Twilight-related, so I might end up thinking it's horrible before I watch it.

Oooh, Netflix has it. But it's not instant streaming :(

Yeah, I wouldn't bother with the remake. There's no way they can do it without diluting the shit out of it. Either try and find a cheap DVD of it or download it from your favourite torrent site ;)

Again though, I must remind you that as brilliant as this film is, it's also quite hideous. It's stayed with me for a lot, lot longer than any other film I've ever seen and I've seen some disturbing films before. So y'know. Don't expect to have fun with this one! ;)

I know I won't, but my sister somehow will :P She was the one during Paranormal Activity 2 (which actually wasn't all that bad) that, when the lady was being dragged down the stairs, shouted "MY ASS! IT HAS NO GRAVITY!"
