Two of the best "rivaling" species...Much agreed!

However, my nerdery has to place Godzilla and Transformers as the most badass species ever created

:fu:

:kissit:

:emperor:

I almost agree, though I am an oldie who prefers the original first two/three generations of the the Transformers franchise. Also, with the small, small exception of the 2007 Transformers film, I fucking hate Michael Bay's fucking meddling with the franchise. :stab:

Transformers were indeed alien, and supercool, but Godzilla? Isn't he just a T-rex in the wrong time and place? ^o)
My dear, dear firend; you just crossed the line...

oops!! sounds like I hit a nerve :bag:

But, it was an honest question - I actually know nothing about Godzilla except for a few old movie clips, so enlighten me ;)

Doesn't have to be alien to be fiction silly

Technically, yes and no. He's a fictional dinosaur called Godzillasaurus (original) that was just another version of T-rex with miniature spines on the back. The 93-94 Godzilla vs. Ghidrah/Mecha Ghidrah covered it nicely.
The origin of Big G is as wiry as a mutant octopus but the general basis is an unhatched Godzillasaurus egg was exposed to Atomic Radiation in Japan and out sprout everyone's favorite King of All Monsters.
I mean, he's got his own star on the Hollywood Hall of Fame...AND HE'S A FOREIGNER!!!! KUDOS!

Ooo didn't realise (read: forgot) there was a thread for this, I was waiting for Yellow to post like he said he was gonna. But it's been a week since I saw it now and I iz impatient.

So anyway, I thought the film was just about classifiable as good, but only just. It fell well short of my expectations, and here's why:

- character development was almost non existent, and the way most of them behaved was just laughable (or it would've been if I hadn't paid over £8 to see it). Case in point
Spoiler: click to toggle

- the Hollywood science. This really pissed me off, cos I haz background in science and do sciencey stuff for my living. None of it was even remotely believable.
Spoiler: click to toggle
Etc, etc, etc. All nonsense, all worth nothing more than my contempt

- Way too often a plot thread would waft off into the ether and the audience was expected to just ignore it.
Spoiler: click to toggle
This was a constant; nothing was ever discussed, it just moved from one scene to the next too often and never returned to tie up previous ones, and the few times some kind of explanation was given, it was done in the most cliched of manners, eg "here's a crap powerpoint presentation to clarify to the audience why you're here and give two of you the opportunity to establish your characters' personalities in their shallow entirety

- If you're going to try and tackle topics such as religion and science operating in harmony, or the beginning of life, then do it properly, ideally without confusing evolution with abiogenesis and inserting what you think are prophetically wise sayings, when really they are just the pretentious scriptings of morons :bored:

Ok, enough bitching. There's also good stuff to say about the film:

- the opening sequence was great, and I really enjoyed the ambiguous idea it lent the whole movie

- Michael Facebender was excellent as David. His ability to portray imitations of emotion and make the audience think he was being something he wasn't is another fine example of how good an actor he is

- me likez action stuff, and there was lots of cool action. Not enough horror, but still fun

- visually the film was lovely without being too over the top (mostly), and it managed to just about maintain the Giger influenced style of the Alien movies, while not trying too hard to be like them. Subtle hints at the xenomorphs, like the wall in the urn room, were nice touches and I imagine one or two scenes would've been awesome in 3D

So, in a nutshell, good but not good enough. 5.9/10 from me. And wooo I made a post worthy of Yellow :cheer:

Thanks for being Siskel to my Ebert. While you have a valid point or two, it was certainly better than a 5.9, Braydaddy.

I don't spend 10 bucks on a Hollywood flick and expect the story to be vetted by deGrasse Tyson. With that said, I want to retire to an island and have Neil teach me about life.

I will agree with those replies. Tyvm ;)

Stephen Colbert's reference to deGrasse Tyson last night, and how the man ruins movies with Sciencey stuff, was purely a coincidence. :P

Still haven't seen it (probably wait for DVD), but I find it sadly amusing that it has been beaten at the box office in the last two weekends by Madagascar 3.

If its on level with the first Alien movie or AvP, I'll buy a ticket.

I'm also a fan of Neil deGrasse Tyson. Was he a part of the movie? He should be.

I should add that there were things I didn't like about it. The ending was a bit meh, and the casting of Guy Pearce was fucking stupid (JUST USE AN OLD PERSON), and I'm not sure I would buy the film on Blu Ray, but still.. a mighty entertaining way to spend a couple of hours :)

Anyone else notice how Halo the story is?

I'm anxious to see this, at the moment, to see how well Rooney Mara is. I loved her in Dragon Tattoo.
