So having listened to all of your beautiful guidance, and now being in a financial position where I can afford such frivolities, I went ahead and got me a shiny new Samsung Galaxy S2. Keep in mind that prior to this, my mobile phone history has been the sort of cheap, nasty Pay As You Go phone that could just about send most of the text messages you try and send, and used WAP to attempt to connect to the internet, invariably failing as soon as you type anything into the Google homepage which took 5 minutes to load in the first place. I'm looking to you guys for some advice on some good free Android-based apps etc, since there's so fucking many of them. In particular I'm looking for a decent Xbox Live app (though I suspect MS are reluctant what with the Windows Phone), some nice new live weather-based Live Wallpapers, a new keyboard that has the comma on the first page and where the smileys show what Android will actually display them as, a clock that looks like the countdown timer in the Swan Station (that's LOST-related, if you don't know), good free games, etc. What I have (and recommend) so far: Angry Birds - obviously 3G Watchdog - for monitoring my data use Shazam - for those awkward moments when I don't know what a song is RAC Traffic - so I don't get stuck in traffic jams Battery Widget - for displaying an actual percentage of battery life Halo Waypoint - for setting up custom challenges on my way home XBOX Live Statistics - really slow and can't import your friends list, but does display all achievement details. So if I'm ever on a train and want to see which achievements I need in which games it's kinda handy. |

Slightly unnecessary post: I can't help you with your Android question related to games. I only have an iPhone and a Windows Phone. However, when I had an Android phone, I used AppBrain to facilitate looking for apps/games and installing them. |

I own a two year-old HTC Aria, that I've rooted and overclocked up to 825 MHz. It's running Android 2.2 (Yeah, old. I know.) Surprisingly, it's actually been decent for its age, and I've had no problem keeping up with the rest of everybody with their shiny Android 3+ devices! Screenshot of my home screen. Because I can. As far as apps go?

widgetsoid is a handy way to combine different widgets together and it's fully customisable including battery percentage. Keyboard wise I use Swiftkey but other wise I'd use the stock ICS keyboard or the Gingerbread one, they're both available on the market for Gingerbread devices and far better than the default Samsung keyboard which is horrendous. Other than that I have the useful stuff, BBC news, Amazon, ebay, skyscanner, trainline, Iplayer etc. Out of the paid games I'd recommend looking at Osmos, I was very impressed with this on the PC and generally hate mobile phone games but it's an amazingly good port and as enjoyable as it is on the PC. Snicks, Crazybydefault - I've added you to Draw something (I think, snicks' picture/name doesn't show but that might be normal), my name is JohnMcL7 if I have it set up properly. It's really annoying as I have a graphics digitiser on my phone as well as the touch screen which allows me to use a stylus the same as a graphics tablet which would be perfect for this but the accuracy is bizarre, it only works if you hold the pen at a certain angle to the screen otherwise the accuracy is miles off and therefore no good.
