It's weird b/c you will hate him almost right up until the end of the main CW arc when he becomes Director of SHIELD. He has one quote that, for me, helped him redeem himself.

It just amazes me how far back they stretched The Road To CW from which covers The Illuminati origin.

He goes on about explaining the idea behind Prison 42. That it was Idea #42 out of 100 cooked up by Stark, Pym and Richards to help change the world.

"Cleaning up SHIELD is number 43. Believe me, ma'am: the super hero community just found the greatest friend they'll ever have. Do you really think I'd let anyone else guard my friends secret identites?"

I think I read the quote you're referring to. Stark standing over Roger's dead body and says "it wasn't worth it." That redeems him a bit for me.

I'm not reading things in order (b/c I didn't know what the order was!), so I am filling in a bunch of pieces as I go. This will likely be my last batch of reading for a while on it.

Wait...do you mean Goliath? What I'm talking about happens at the end of the main 5 issue run which follows:

-The Stamford Catalyst
-The Split Down The Middle
-The Birth of The Secret Avengers
-Spidermans Double Jeopardy
-The S.H.R.A
-Prison 42
-The Breakout
-The Fallout (Cap being arrested, Tony becoming SHIELD Director)

Believe it or not, and I'll probably sound like a heartless bastard for it, but I absolutely HATED Miriam Sharpe (the mother of a young victim of Stamford, Damien, who spits in Tony's face). I totally understand her reasons and all for her reaction, nobody should bury their child, but she was severely hypocritical. She condemned and practically abhored Stark not even b/c he was Iron Man but b/c his money funds an uncountable set of super hero groups. I believe he funds (if not helps) ALL the Avenger groups (East, West, etc).
Then she had NO problem letting him spend money to further her cause in support of the SHRA and so on. That kind of thing bugs me.

No, it's Cap, but I can't remember from which issue it comes. Stark has just become SHIELD director and Cap has just been killed. Sorry I can't remember the reference.

I can see what you mean about Ms. Sharpe. Tony seemed to go out his way to ingratiate himself toward her "can you see all we're doing so that it never happens again? can you see?" (my interp)

Here's the reference, Psycko:

Oh okay. That takes place after The Death of Cap which is more or less the tail end of Civil War. WAY past the Stark quote I referenced.

I did -

When he became Director of SHIELD. I was skeptical at first but at that point, ANYBODY is better than Maria Hill. I hate her with such a passion. My favorite part of the entire story arc is when she asks Cap, no she doesn't ask - she practically orders him to take down anyone opposing the SHRA. The irony of Wingtips (Cap) defying an order by his "Commanding Officer" and going rogue just overwhelmed me. He did the right thing and he says why:

Shield Agent: How many rebels do you estimate, Captain?

Cap: A lot.

Hill: Any majors?

Cap: A few but mostly the heroes who stick to the streets like Daredevil and Luke Cage.

Hill: So nobody you can't handle?

Cap: Excuse me?

Hill: You heard.

Cap: You're asking me to arrest people who risk their lives for this country every day of the week.

Hil: No, I'm asking you to obey the will of the American people.

oops sorry! I know I read that one somewhere too, maybe in the Confession issue as well. I've definitely read it before though. I can see why that redeems him a bit.

Just finished "Road to Civil War" with Tony paying off Titanium Man to "fake attack" (and put Spiderman in jeopardy) so that his case could be better made to the congressional committe; then he LIES about it to Peter who he keeps telling, "trust me." LYING RICH SLIME

What did I tell you? LOL

I mean, he DID forsee this coming and he did have the best intentions...but you know what they say with the Road to Hell?

Another favorite part from the main arc is the involvement of Punisher. You don't realize til after he makes his presence known that you can see him in a few panels "stakling" the heroes. Then he flat out kills Jack Olantern and Jetser when they try to join the A-R.

yeah I read that, then Cap beats the crap out of him but he won't fight back b/c he's got too much respect for Cap! cool. It's hard not to like The Punisher.

Well he was the first true Anti-Hero for Marvel. The man was a decorated war vet and prestiged government agent and then his family gets mowed down? It's just as hard to not sympathize for him.
